Job Summary Provides care for animals, facilities, and instructional support for Horse Center programs for the Animal Science Department. Responsible for daily operations and usage of the center, coordinating support activities with the Equine Faculty member. Responsible for health and well‑being of on‑site animals, performing routine horse‑care tasks such as handling, feeding, cleaning stalls, turning out horses, and transporting horses and supplies. Responsible for custodial tasks, routine property maintenance, security, general yard work, mowing grounds, and coordinating facility maintenance with the facilities department. Performs farm operations: maintaining fields, managing forage harvest, plowing, disking, leveling, planting, fertilizing, harvesting crops, cutting hay, raking, bailing, transporting, repairing horse stalls, arenas, fences, troubleshooting equipment, and managing chemicals and manure. Oversees part‑time and non‑contracted staff: recommends hiring, orientates and trains, establishes schedules, reviews work, and processes timesheets. Serves as lab assistant to the Animal Science Department, assisting faculty with animal prep, facility use, and providing out‑of‑classroom instruction on safety, health, and equine operation protocols. Maintains a safe working and teaching environment, provides safety training, serves as on‑site contact for emergencies, and arranges emergency appointments. Prepares and manages calendar for scheduling livestock and center usage, coordinating activities with college and community users, enforcing procedures, providing assistance, and addressing user concerns. Participates in department budget building and long‑term vision development for horse management, attending meetings and serving on committees. Works with faculty to determine supply needs, places orders, arranges deliveries, receives, stores supplies, purchases feed, and maintains center records. Administers approved health maintenance programs, schedules veterinary appointments, coordinates farrier appointments, maintains horse care items and files. Participates in professional and self‑development courses as appropriate. Performs other related duties as assigned. Physical Skills and Abilities Requires good hand‑eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate hand tools and equipment. Requires considerable physical effort, including lifting over 50 lbs., bending, climbing, kneeling, stooping, crouching, balancing, guiding, reaching, and standing for extended periods. Must have visual acuity to read words and numbers and operate equipment. Working Conditions Work is performed outdoors and in outdoor structures (horse barns) in a farm setting with exposure to inclement weather. Hours vary with season and requirements of farm, animal and program work. May require early/late hours, weekends, college closures, holidays, or shift changes with little notice. Some exposure to safety or health hazards such as equipment noise, odor, manure, blood and fluids, and farm chemicals. May experience periodic stress to meet deadlines or deal with unhappy patrons. Education and Experience Position requires an AA/AS degree with emphasis in horse management, animal science, agriculture including livestock, or a related field plus a minimum of two years of full‑time experience working with horses and farm work, or four years of full‑time related experience. Requires experience driving a large horse trailer. Teaching or training experience with students or employees in a farm environment or instructional setting is desirable. Experience in supervision/lead work and basic facility maintenance or repair work is also desired. Licenses and Certificates Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license. Requires an Oregon Public Pesticide Applicator License, or must obtain within 90 days of employment. Requires current first aid and CPR cards, or must obtain within 60 days of employment. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Excellent communication skills are required to assist students in understanding work they are to perform. Must have technical knowledge of equine operations, and be highly skilled in riding, training, breeding, showing, handling and caring for horses. Requires working knowledge of safety practices, work hazards, and emergency procedures. Skill in operating farm tools, machinery, equipment and tractor, plus knowledge of general maintenance and repair is necessary. Preference for knowledge of special equine materials and supplies. Working knowledge of instructional techniques sufficient to instruct students on an informal level is preferred. Employment Requirements Criminal background check – C4. Compensation Starting annual salary: $26,744.50 for a 247‑day contract, prorated at 0.50 FTE. Includes a comprehensive benefits package.
