The Observation Unit at BEMC delivers coordinated, short-term treatment and assessment for patients awaiting inpatient decision. It serves about 50% of ED patients in a 60-bed unit with both monitored and un-monitored beds. Currently offering Full-time and Part-time day shift positions. A $3/hr weekend differential is available when applicable. Position Summary This role assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and professional standards. The position is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self or others under their direction, utilizing specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills appropriate to the patient population. Core Functions Assess patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs. Review patient history and physical with patient/family and ensure completion within the appropriate timeframe. Review diagnostics and laboratory data and report abnormal results to the physician(s) and other appropriate caregivers. Complete assessments and reassessments as needed. Formulate a plan of care, including the discharge plan, utilizing assessment data and input from patient, family, and health care team. Initiate a plan of care based on patient specific needs, set realistic, measurable goals, and revise the plan of care to reflect changing patient needs. Implement the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation, and supervision of the health care team. Provide care based on physician orders and the nursing plan of care in compliance with policies, procedures, standards of care, and regulatory requirements. Delegate appropriately and supervise other licensed nurses and personnel. Promote continuity of care by accurately communicating patient status to other caregivers. Evaluate the patient’s and family’s response to care and teaching, and revise the plan of care as needed. Measure progress toward goals and expected outcomes in collaboration with the health care team. Assess the effectiveness of patient teaching. Document assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record. Documentation should be legible, timely, and in accordance with policy, reflecting objective and subjective data, nursing interventions, and patient response. Record physician orders accurately and promptly. Provide evidence-based care and may participate in research activities. Engage in unit or facility shared leadership. Participate in education, role development, and orientation of staff, patients, students, families, and visitors. Mentor others when appropriate. Contribute to society through activities that lead to excellent patient outcomes. Actively participate in the improvement of national nursing quality indicators and outcomes. Join professional organizations as needed. Support staff and workflow in the department, including supervision of team members when required. Interact with all levels of staff across departments, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts. Provide spiritual support when indicated. Prioritize and synthesize data from multiple sources to support patient and family responses to health status changes. Minimum Qualifications Current, valid RN license in the state of practice or equivalent (temporary/interim or compact). BLS certification is required. One year of experience in an acute care hospital setting within the past 12 months as a Registered Nurse in a specialty area. Maintain clinical performance competencies appropriate to the area of practice as demonstrated through annual validations. Additional certifications or continuing education may be required based on area of practice. For positions requiring a fingerprint clearance card, maintain the required card for the duration of employment. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree preferred. Professional certification preferred. Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
