Staff Accountant – Government Contract Billing | New York, NY | Hybrid $75k | Temp-to-Perm

About the Role:

A well-established New York City nonprofit organization is seeking a Staff Accountant with Government Contract Billing experience to join its growing finance team. This role is ideal for an accounting professional with hands-on experience billing NYC/NYS grants and strong Excel/reporting skills. You’ll work closely with the Controller and Government Contracts team in a collaborative environment supporting government-funded programs and financial reporting.

Compensation & Schedule:

• Pay Rate: $40/hour
• Conversion Salary: $75,000
• Temp-to-Perm
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM
• 35-hour work week
• Hybrid: 3 days in office / 2 days remote

Top 3 Requirements:

1. Government contract billing experience
2. Advanced Excel/reporting skills — strong experience with PivotTables and VLOOKUPs
3. Passport experience — required

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare and submit assigned government contract billings and related financial reports accurately and on time.
• Assist with government contract renewals, registrations, and required documentation.
• Support the Director of Government Contracts and Controller with annual audits, including CFR, SEFA, and funder audits .
• Assist with government contract budgets, budget modifications, advance requests, new need requests, and related submissions.
• Ensure contract cost allocations align with approved budgets and communicate variances to management.
• Prepare monthly financial reports and analysis for internal meetings.
• Perform financial analysis and reporting as needed.
• Maintain current knowledge of funding agency and government contract reporting requirements.
• Assist with additional accounting and government contract projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent experience.
• 1+ year of accounting and government contract management experience.
• Hands-on government contract billing experience with agencies such as:
• DHS, HASA, DOHMH, HUD, OMH a plus
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables and VLOOKUPs .
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
• Passport experience required.

• Government Contract Billing Department: 8-person team
• Reports to: Controller, Nonprofit Operations
