The Opportunity
The Cost Accounting Clerk supports the organization's cost accounting function by maintaining accurate cost records, preparing cost analyses, and assisting with financial reporting for service operations. This position ensures proper allocation and tracking of service delivery costs to support management decision-making and profitability analysis.
What You'll Do
Cost Data Management
- Collect, input, and maintain cost data for various service lines and client accounts
- Allocate direct and indirect costs to appropriate cost centers and service categories
- Prepare and post cost accounting journal entries and adjustments
- Reconcile cost accounts and resolve discrepancies
Reporting and Analysis
- Generate monthly cost reports and variance analyses
- Assist in preparing budget vs. actual cost comparisons
- Support profitability analysis by service line and client engagement
- Maintain standard cost models and update as needed
Administrative Support
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures
- Maintain supporting documentation for cost allocations and calculations
- Participate in internal and external audit processes
- File and organize cost accounting records and reports
Process Support
- Monitor and improve cost accounting procedures and controls
- Collaborate with operations staff to ensure accurate cost capture
- Assist with special projects and ad-hoc analyses as assigned
- Support budget preparation and forecasting activities
Performance Standards
- Accuracy in data entry and calculations (target: 99%+ accuracy)
- Timely completion of assigned reports and deadlines
- Effective communication with team members and other departments
- Continuous improvement in processes and procedures
- Compliance with company policies and accounting standards
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
Experience: 1-3 years of accounting or finance experience, preferably in service industry
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
- Manual dexterity for keyboard and calculator operation
- Visual acuity for detailed numerical work
Work Environment
- Standard office environment
- Normal business hours with occasional overtime during month-end closing
- Minimal travel required
