Deputy City Attorney (Civil Litigation Division, General Litigation Unit)

Job Overview The San Diego City Attorney’s Office protects the people of San Diego by serving as chief legal counsel to the city’s elected officials and operational departments. The Civil Litigation Division is seeking a Deputy City Attorney for the General Litigation Unit to prosecute or defend civil lawsuits in which the City is a party. Responsibilities Defend the City in civil actions, including police false arrest, excessive force, personal injury, property damage, dangerous conditions, motor vehicle accidents, constitutional claims, and legal challenges to ordinances or compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Brown Act, and the California Public Records Act. Handle writs and appeals, prepare pleadings for trials, hearings, discovery, and other legal proceedings. Represent the City and its officers and employees in their official capacities at trial. Present recommendations to the City Council in closed session. Perform other work assigned by the Chief Deputy City Attorney. Minimum Requirements Must be an active member in good standing with the State Bar of California; must promptly apply for admission to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California if selected. At least 2 years of civil litigation experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience preparing cases for hearings and trials in all courts. Demonstrated experience with all pretrial phases of litigation, including discovery, depositions of parties and experts, and trial preparation. Strong research, legal writing, and oral presentation skills. Travel & Vehicle Must be able to travel outside the office for legal proceedings or meetings. A valid California Class C driver’s license and personal vehicle are required, or the ability to travel to various locations throughout the City in a timely manner. Compensation & Benefits Annual salary based on the Deputy City Attorney salary table and dependent on qualifications.
