Laboratory Education Technical Specialist

Job Summary

The Clinical Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for coordinating daily technical operations within the clinical laboratory, ensuring high-quality testing, regulatory compliance, and effective workflow management. This role provides technical expertise, oversees quality systems, supports staff development, and works closely with leadership to maintain efficient laboratory operations and accurate patient results. Perform routine and complex laboratory testing, spending approximately 50% of the time working on the bench to support staffing needs and maintain technical proficiency.

Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions

Technical Coordination & Oversight

• Coordinate and support day-to-day laboratory operations across assigned departments and campuses.
• Provide advanced technical guidance on laboratory testing, methodologies, policies, and procedures.
• Troubleshoot complex instrumentation, testing issues, and workflow challenges.
• Assist in validation, verification, and implementation of new tests and equipment.
• Serves as a technical resource for medical providers by responding to inquiries related to laboratory testing, result interpretation, and methodology.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

• Ensure adherence to regulatory standards (CLIA, CAP, OSHA and other accrediting agencies)
• Monitor quality control (QC), proficiency testing (PT), and performance metrics.
• Identify, investigate, and resolve quality issues and implement corrective actions.
• Maintain inspection readiness and assist with audits, surveys, and regulatory visits.

Staff Support & Training

• Train and mentor Medical Technologists (MT), Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT), and support staff.
• Assist with competency assessments, continuing education, and staff development initiatives.
• Provide technical support and coaching to promote high performance and best practices.  

Workflow & Operations Management

• Coordinate staffing assignments and workflow to ensure timely test turnaround.
• Support scheduling alignment with workload demands.
• Optimize laboratory processes to improve efficiency and productivity.

Safety & Laboratory Standards

• Promote and enforce laboratory safety policies and infection control standards.
• Coordinate safety training and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
• Monitor laboratory environment for adherence to safety and quality standards.

Administrative & Collaboration Duties

• Assist laboratory leadership with operational planning and departmental initiatives.
• Maintain documentation, reports, and regulatory records.
• Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, and other departments to ensure quality patient care.
• Participate in quality improvement, safety, and organizational committees.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

• Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field

Experience:

• Required
  • Four or more years of experience in a high-complexity clinical laboratory setting
• Preferred
  • One or more years of experience in technical leadership, coordination, or supervisory role

Certification/Licensure:

• Preferred
  • ASCP (MLS/MT) or equivalent certification
