Inside Sales Representative (Hardware & Building Materials)

Monon, IN | On-site | Full-time | $15.00–$20.00 per hour

R.P. Lumber is hiring an Inside Sales Representative for our Monon, IN store. This is a showroom role for someone who likes helping contractors and homeowners choose the right materials, write accurate orders, and keep the sales floor ready.

You will report to the Retail Manager. You will quote and sell in person, by phone, and by email, run the register, and support merchandising and special orders.

What you will do

Customer service and sales

- Help customers and contractors with product selection, pricing, quotes, orders, deliveries, and installations

- Follow up on orders and resolve service issues; involve the Retail or General Manager when needed

- Build relationships with walk-in and contractor customers

- Support Outside Sales with order questions, product information, and pricing

- Learn estimating and material takeoffs for construction projects

- Grow product knowledge across residential, rural, industrial, and commercial building materials

Orders, register, and credit

- Enter orders, pricing, and related data in the point-of-sale system (BisTrack) so invoices, work orders, and tickets are accurate

- Operate and balance the cash register

- Research credits, returns, and past-due accounts as assigned

- Help with special-order products using supplier catalogs (pricing, colors, sizes, availability)

- Work with the credit department on applications and collections when asked

Showroom, inventory, and safety

- Stock, face, straighten, price, and clean assigned merchandising areas

- Move merchandise for customer pickup or delivery

- Help prevent shrinkage, shoplifting, and internal theft

- Follow store safety practices and attend required safety meetings

- Complete other showroom duties as assigned, which may include mixing paint, cutting keys, or cutting glass/Plexiglas where those products are sold

What you need to have

- High school diploma or GED

- Clear communication skills and the ability to listen to customers and contractors

- Comfort with computers, math, and organized, accurate work

- Ability to learn BisTrack (point of sale), Microsoft Word and Excel, and related software

- Valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and a Missouri Class E license

- Ability to work a flexible retail schedule, including weekends and holidays

- Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, including standing and walking most of the day, using hands and arms, talking and listening, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, working in the showroom, warehouse, and outdoors in changing weather, frequently lifting or moving 10 to 25 pounds, and occasionally lifting or moving 50 to 100 pounds

Nice to have

- Prior sales experience

- Knowledge of building materials, construction, or related equipment

- About one year of related work experience

- Intermediate skill in BisTrack, Word, Excel, or similar systems

Pay and benefits

Pay range: $15.00–$20.00 per hour

Potential pay rate based upon region, experience, education, licenses and certifications.

Schedule and work location

This is an on-site position. Weekend and holiday work is required based on store needs.
