Academic Mentor

Position Summary
Academic Mentors support the academic growth of our elementary-aged Dream Scholars. By providing one-on-one or small group tutoring, mentors help build core skills in reading, math, and writing-while encouraging a love of learning and school engagement.
Purpose of the Role
The purpose of an Academic Mentor is to help Dream Scholars strengthen academic skills and confidence through consistent encouragement and hands-on support. Mentors contribute to creating a positive learning environment where students can thrive academically and personally.
Primary Responsibilities
Academic Mentors are expected to:
- Provide weekly academic support to elementary-aged Dream Scholars
- Offer tutoring in reading, writing, math, or general homework help
- Build positive, consistent relationships with students
- Attend a required training session before beginning service
- Follow the Volunteer Code of Conduct and all IHDF guidelines
- Share occasional feedback about your mentoring experience to help strengthen the program
Time Commitment
- Elementary School: One hour per week (after school)
- Middle & High School (optional): One - Two hours per month
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must pass all IHDF screening and background checks
- Spanish-speaking volunteers are welcome but not required
