The Egan Library, University of Alaska Southeast, is seeking a part-time reference librarian to cover evening and weekend desk shifts. This position provides reference services and specialized research guidance for student, faculty, staff, and public users of an academic library, utilizing online databases, the Internet, the Alaska Library Catalog, and print resources. Under the supervision of the Information Literacy Librarian, Temporary Reference Librarians play an important role in maintaining full services during hours of operations. Professional training and development opportunities will be provided as needed. The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) is located in the traditional territory of the Lingít, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples, a majestic array of islands, channels, fjords, coastal mountains, icefields, and glaciers. On our three campuses, students have opportunities for field study, research, creative production, and internships in the Tongass National Forest, in marine and freshwater environments, with local businesses, and within tribal, federal, and state governmental entities. The university is also proud to be the home of Alaska Native Studies, which includes the languages, culture, and art of the Indigenous Peoples of Southeast Alaska. The Temporary Reference Librarian is dedicated to fostering a safe, supportive, and open environment at the University of Alaska Southeast. We prioritize equitable access to resources and opportunities for all individuals to reach their full potential, recognizing the importance of cultural safety and belonging for present and future success. Candidates should understand the principles and practices of the library profession and have a working knowledge of research methods and tools including knowledge of, or the ability to quickly learn and effectively use, Egan Library’s catalog and research databases. Candidates should have basic computer skills (Google Workspace, MS Office), be able and willing to quickly learn new technologies and software, and be able to teach library users of varying skill levels to effectively use library technology. Candidates must have excellent customer service skills, be reliable and able to work independently, and be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Experience providing reference in an academic setting is preferred along with a background working with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Minimum Qualifications: For Grade 78: A Bachelor’s degree with four years of relevant work experience in a library or similar setting, working directly with patrons and demonstrating knowledge of library print and database resources, library service provisions, and technology troubleshooting abilities. Candidates with a combination of education and experience will be considered. For Grade 80: A Master’s degree (ALA accredited MLS or MLIS) in library/information studies is required. Position Details: This position is located on the UAS Juneau campus in Juneau, Alaska. This is a part-time, non-exempt, temporary staff position.
