Position Overview:

Our Camp Butternut Springs overnight camp is a place where energetic and passionate staff come together to provide a safe and positive learning environment for girls ages 5-17.

The Unit Leader leads camper care and program delivery within an assigned living unit. This role supervises and mentors Unit Counselors, supports progressive Girl Scout experiences, and serves as the first-line resource for camper and staff concerns. The Unit Leader also provides direct camper coverage as needed, lives on-site during the camp season, and reports to the Program Director.

Compensation and Benefits:

• Pay: $135 per day
• Included room and board for staff 18+ if living on-site
• Optional Archery, High Adventure, Lifeguard, and Aquatic Small Craft training available if interested.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Supervise, coach, and support Unit Counselors in camper care, program delivery, and daily unit operations.
• Provide direct camper supervision and cover counselor breaks or absences as needed.
• Guide camper planning, schedules, activities, meals, transitions, and overnight routines within the assigned unit.
• Monitor camper health, safety, hygiene, hydration, nutrition, rest, and emotional well-being.
• Serve as the first-level resource for camper concerns, staff questions, conflict resolution, and problem-solving.
• Complete and review required program and unit documentation and communicate significant concerns to leadership.
• Maintain unit spaces, equipment, housekeeping, sanitation, and readiness throughout the camp season.
• Participate in staff training, camp opening and closing activities, and other camp responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience, Skills, and Qualifications:

• Must be 19+ years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent; age 21+ preferred.
• 1-3 years of experience working with children in a camp or comparable youth-serving setting.
• Ability to supervise, mentor, and provide constructive support to peers or seasonal staff.
• Strong organization, communication, initiative, and ability to manage changing priorities.
• Ability to work outdoors, navigate uneven terrain, participate in camp activities, and safely lift/carry up to 25 pounds.
• First Aid, CPR, and Mandated Reporter training required by the first day of camp; additional program certifications may be required.

Preferred

• Prior experience supervising or mentoring peers in a camp, recreation, education, or youth program.
• Lifeguard, archery, or other relevant camp program certification.

Work Environment: Candidates should be willing to work in an indoor and outdoor camp setting, which includes working irregular hours with limited or simple equipment, rustic facilities, wildlife and insects; limited technology while at camp, and exposure to sun, rain, and other weather conditions.
