Job Summary
The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) provides anesthesia care to a wide variety of patients from pre‑term neonates to geriatrics. Administers appropriate anesthetics in consultation with the attending anesthesiologist in a manner consistent with standards of practice. Familiar with the use of anesthesia machines and related equipment, assist in transport of patients, maintain adequate patient records, participate in the teaching activities of the department, participate in a variety of continuing education program, and demonstrate a high level of professionalism in the performance of duties. Provide resuscitative care as indicated. Sign‑On Bonus Available (up to $50,000 for certain sites) .
Work Locations and Facilities
- MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital – pediatric level‑one academic trauma center with operating suites, cath labs, endoscopy suites, minor procedure rooms, and radiology suites.
- The University Hospital – level‑one academic trauma center with 21 operating rooms, interventional radiology suite, and non‑operating room sites like CT, MRI, bronch, neuro‑angio.
- MUSC Ashley River Towers Hospital – adult care center with 10 operating rooms and a robust NORA practice.
- Rutledge Tower Ambulatory Surgery – 9 ORs for adult outpatient and inpatient populations with specialty groupings such as ENT, oral surgery, ophthalmology, etc.
Schedule
Work hours: 40 per week. Most work 3 shifts of 13.5 hours per week. 24‑hour shift staff cover most nights. Limited 10‑hour shifts. Self‑scheduling with a volunteer basis for weekends, holidays, and night coverage.
Responsibilities
- Administer anesthetics in collaboration with attending anesthesiologist.
- Familiar with anesthesia machines and equipment; assist in patient transport.
- Maintain adequate patient records and participate in teaching and continuing education.
- Provide resuscitative care as indicated and maintain a high level of professionalism.
- Assist in teaching activities of the department.
- Participate in continuing education programs.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Graduate of a Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs approved program and certified or recertified by the National Board on Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
- Insurable by the medical malpractice insurer of MUSC for the required limits.
- Minimum education requirement: master’s degree or higher with concentration in Nurse Anesthesia for hires after March 1, 2019.
- Current competency in clinical privileges and operation of anesthesia equipment.
- Current knowledge in anesthesia practice and safety; universal precautions in patient contact.
- Effective working relationship with surgeons, residents, anesthesia personnel, and nursing staff.
- APRNs or eligible candidates with current license to practice in South Carolina.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.

- Ability to use lower extremities for balance and coordination (frequent).
- Ability to reach in all directions (continuous).
- Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted (infrequent).
- Ability to lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted (infrequent).
- Ability to lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. (infrequent).
- Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force (frequent).
- Examples: To transfer a 100 lb. patient that cannot assist requires 50 lbs. of force; for every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required; 20 lbs. of force required to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet; 25 lbs. of force required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand.
- Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes (continuous).
- Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance (continuous).
- Ability to match or discriminate between colors (continuous).
- Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception (continuous).
- Good peripheral vision capabilities (continuous).
- Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction (continuous).
- Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations (continuous).
- Ability to work rotating shifts (frequent).
- Ability to work overtime as required (frequent).
- Ability to work in a latex safe environment (continuous).
- Ability to maintain tactile sensory functions (continuous).
- Ability to maintain good olfactory sensory function (continuous).
- Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required (continuous).
