UFCW Local 400 is seeking to hire someone in the following position: Communications Manager

Location: Landover, MD. Applicants must be willing to travel throughout UFCW Local 400's jurisdiction, including Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and parts of Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Your responsibilities:
As the Communications Manager, you will report to the Strategic Campaigns Director and work closely with departments across the union—including Organizing, Political, Community, Member Services, Collective Bargaining, and Administration—to manage our internal and external communications, support strategic campaigns, and help grow our membership.

Day-to-day duties and responsibilities can include:

• Working closely with departments to create, manage, publish, and evaluate the effectiveness of online and offline content.
• Working with consultants and contractors as needed
• Serving as Local 400’s content strategist and creator across our entire digital presence, including social media, websites, text messaging, email, and digital marketing
• Writing, editing, and reviewing copy for digital content, print materials, press releases, and more
• Creating and managing online advocacy actions, such as petitions and letter campaigns, as well as questionnaires, surveys, and other forms
• Leading analytics and reporting to help assess effectiveness and impact
• Working to maintain brand visual identity and consistency across the organization
• Monitoring national media and local news across a dozen different media markets in the union’s jurisdiction
• Maintaining an organized archive of digital assets, including tens of thousands of photos, videos, and other multimedia
• Analyzing, charting, and manipulating datasets and other information as needed
• AV support for events
• Other duties to support ongoing campaigns as needed

The ideal candidate has skills and experience in several of the following areas (and is willing to learn skills for which they do not yet have experience):

• Excellent writing skills with the ability to produce high-quality work under tight deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills
• Messaging strategy—developing effective communications for diverse audiences across multiple campaigns.
• Website management – WordPress (or similar content management system), HTML & CSS coding
• Online advocacy – Action Network (or similar platform) 
• Text message management – Hustle, Phone2Action (or similar text platforms)
• Graphic design for social media, web, and print materials
• Social media management—including Facebook, X, Bluesky, Instagram, and TikTok
• Digital asset management—including photography, video, and multimedia.
• Photography and videography for events
• Video production – filming, editing, distributing
• CRM database management – Salesforce or equivalent
• Traditional media engagement – creating and distributing press releases/statements/advisories, developing press lists and relationships with journalists, pitching news stories, conducting interviews, training spokespeople, and analyzing coverage
• Experience and expertise in the following software:
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), including advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Docs)
  • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Lightroom, etc.) or equivalent

Other Qualifications:

• Experience working in a campaigning, advocacy, or grassroots organizing setting (experience in labor movement preferred)
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to lead, organize and plan work
• Willingness to work long, irregular hours
• Willingness to travel throughout the union's jurisdiction.
• Valid driver's license (required)
• Desirable but not required:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Experience working in retail and/or service industry
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

Type of Employment: Full-time salaried

Compensation:

• $70,000 – $80,000 annually, based on qualifications and experience.
