District Manager Organics & Agriculture

Job Summary Manages the day‑to‑day collection operations of multiple sites within a single line of business, establishes and maintains performance and productivity metrics, and manages cost processes and P&L. Operations managers and/or supervisors report directly to this role. The District Manager (DM) oversees operational activities similar to a high‑volume manufacturing facility, adapting to fluctuations in raw materials and ensuring biological systems function efficiently to maintain continuous production. Location & Travel Primarily overseeing two sites at Lathrop, with time divided between Lathrop and Altamont sites. Responsibilities Knowledge of the lifecycle and upkeep of "yellow iron" equipment, such as loaders, grinders, screeners, and windrow turners. Experience working with state environmental agencies (CalRecycle, BAAQMD, or EPA) and understanding Title 14 or comparable composting regulations. Skill in streamlining the process from the tipping floor to the finished product to prevent costly backlogs. Understanding of Aerated Static Pile (ASP) vs. Windrow methods. Manage the district’s day‑to‑day operations and provide daily support to drivers in ensuring safety, service, and savings. Execute necessary precautions to ensure safety and compliance with company, OSHA, and other standards and regulations. Ensure thorough root‑cause investigations for all injuries and incidents, following up with consistent coaching and retraining. Oversee department personnel needs, including selection, coaching, disciplining, training, evaluating performance, and managing termination, compensation, and promotion decisions. Formulate short‑term and long‑term goals and action plans in conjunction with the Senior District Manager and/or Director of Disposal Operations. Participate in regular P&L reviews to ensure budgets are met; develop and implement programs for optimal equipment utilization, maintenance, and labor and material costs. Interact with local city, municipal, and county agencies to ensure customer satisfaction, improve efficiency, renew contracts, negotiate new contracts, and establish WM as a good corporate citizen. Qualifications Required Associate’s Degree or high school diploma/GED with two (2) years of relevant work experience. Two years in a role with supervisory and/or P&L responsibility, in addition to educational requirements. Preferred B.S. in Environmental Science, Civil/Chemical Engineering, or Agribusiness (MBA is a significant plus for the financial side of the role). Certified Compost Operations Manager (CCOM) certification from the US Composting Council. OSHA 30‑Hour certification. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; must maintain this throughout employment. Physical Requirements Key points regarding physical demands and occupational risks. Pay Expected base pay range for this office/on‑site position: $109,000 - $120,000.
