Engineer I-IV (Transmission/Distribution Planning Contracts)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Personnel in this job title may be covered by NERC CIP cyber security standards; candidates must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (identity verification and criminal background check), attend cyber security training, and complete annual training. Depending on location, a credit check may also be required.

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Engineer plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates projects of moderate to large scope, evaluates engineering techniques, and functions as a staff advisor or consultant.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides engineering expertise for projects of varying complexity, from moderate to large. Leads or conducts performance, cost, and scheduling studies and evaluations. Supports operational areas with standard and non‑standard engineering techniques, practices, and procedures. Communicates engineering ideas, recommendations, and evaluations to diverse internal and external audiences. Represents the company’s interests in engineering matters ranging from fundamental to advanced. Provides technical support and consultation to associates, contractors, and personnel. Helps develop and apply new engineering standards and participates in the formulation of company and industry standards. Provides advanced or routine technical direction and oversight to contractors and company personnel as needed. Leads staff engineers, professionals, and technicians, and provides training when appropriate.

COMPETENCIES

Extensive knowledge of engineering principles, practices, regulations, and economic/decision analysis in generation, transmission, distribution, system planning, financial and regulatory issues, asset utilization, and environmental controls. Ability to read, interpret, and apply national, state, and local codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, ACI, AISC, ASME, NACE, etc.). Ability to translate electrical theory and physics to utility applications to improve system reliability. Strong leadership, interpersonal, and self‑motivation skills. Comfortable working in and around high‑voltage (up to 345 kV) electrical facilities and equipment. Ability to forecast budgets. Qualified to perform performance, cost, and scheduling studies using conventional and advanced techniques. Competent in troubleshooting and repair decision‑making following company protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering accredited by ABET with four or more years of engineering experience, or equivalent. Master’s Degree in Engineering preferred (or three or more years of experience). Fundamentals of Engineering certificate preferred. Professional Engineer license in the State of New Mexico preferred. Current, legally valid driver’s license required. Strong written and verbal communication skills (reports, correspondence, speeches, presentations). Proficiency with electrical engineering design programs (e.g., AutoCAD) and standard office software (Word, Access, Excel). Problem‑solving ability to carry out complex instructions and address multi‑variable problems.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Read and interpret documents. Write routine reports, correspondence, speeches, and presentations. Present effectively to customers, employees, and managers.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Proficient with personal computers, electrical engineering design programs (AutoCAD), and office applications (Word, Access, Excel).

ANALYSIS AND PROBLEM‑SOLVING ABILITY

Apply common sense understanding to execute complex instructions and solve problems involving several variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, exposure to outdoor elements, lifting up to 50 pounds, crouching, bending, climbing, and working at height. Protective equipment required: hard‑hat, safety glasses, and hearing protection.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Time is divided between office and field; majority of time is in the office. Work involves high‑voltage electrical facilities, computers, office equipment, and construction equipment.

Bachelor of Engineering.
