Controller

Siino & Associates LLC

Job Description Our client, a nonprofit organization located in Walnut Creek, CA, is looking for a Controller to be responsible for planning, managing, and controlling the activities of the organization. The role reports to the Executive Director and involves managing general accounting processes, supervising the annual audit and tax returns, and meeting various reporting requirements. The candidate should demonstrate high professional standards, ethical principles, and meticulous attention to detail while handling routine and ad hoc accounting support functions. Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Compliance Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Oversee the preparation of the annual audit and work with external auditors. Ensure compliance with all applicable financial regulations, laws, and guidelines (e.g., 990 filings, state and federal grants). Budgeting & Forecasting (FP&A) Lead the budgeting process, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and appropriate allocation of resources. Develop and manage quarterly and annual financial forecasts. Work with department heads to track expenditures and revenue and ensure budgetary compliance. Accounting Operations Oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance. Maintain accurate records of financial transactions in accordance with GAAP. Ensure timely and accurate processing of all financial transactions and reporting. Cash Flow Management Ensure proper management of cash flow, liquidity, and working capital. Oversee banking relationships and optimize cash reserves for operations and capital projects. Internal Controls & Process Improvement Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets and ensure financial accuracy. Identify areas for process improvement and efficiency, develop recommendations, and implement them. Strategic Financial Leadership Partner with the Executive Director and senior leadership in decision‑making to ensure long‑term financial health. Participate in strategic planning discussions, providing financial insights and analysis. Grant Management & Reporting Ensure accurate tracking and reporting of grant funds and donations, ensuring compliance with donor restrictions and funding requirements. Work with Development to monitor donor and grantor obligations and reporting. Excellent analytical, correlation, reasoning, and problem‑solving skills. Aptitude for data mining and report generation. Qualifications and Requirements B.S. in Accounting; CPA and/or MBA in Finance preferred. 8 years accounting experience, 5 years in nonprofit management. At least five years as Accounting Manager and/or Controller or equivalent, managing a budget of at least $5 million. Supervisory, coaching, and mentorship experience. Strong analytical skills. Ability to work independently and under tight deadlines. Ability to work with leadership and management professionally. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word. Responsive to the needs of both internal and external parties. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Technologically savvy, with experience collaborating with IT staff to develop and implement new processes and systems that increased efficiency. Flexible and self‑starter; able to multi‑task while being highly detail oriented. Excellent people skills; experience collaborating in a multidisciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team.
