Special Recreation Camp Counselor

Responsibilities Assist with implementation of recreation camp program for school‑age children with special needs. Make recommendations for adaptations to meet the needs of children with special needs. Provide guidance to children in personal care and behavioral issues. Assist Camp Supervisor with planning, promoting, organizing and implementing daily activities, special events, field trips, etc. Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week; adapt programs to include all campers. Supervise children in daily camp activities at all times. Provide emotional support and encouragement to campers. Assist with cleaning up after all activities. Report any accidents or incidents to the Camp Supervisor. Provide personal care, feeding, and toileting for campers as required. Ensure that safety standards are maintained at all times. Promote communication with the site supervisor and parents/guardians of camp participants. Qualifications Must be 18 years of age or older. Current college student or recent college/university graduate preferred. At least 1–2 years of experience in Special Education, Therapeutic Recreation or a related field working with children, specifically children with special needs preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Exercise considerable tact and courtesy when interacting with program participants, parents and support staff. Consistent and reliable attendance record throughout the 4‑week program is required. Available to work a revised schedule when needed. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Successful completion of pre‑employment checks including criminal history, background and DMV record checks. Ability to work with children with special needs that may include special medical conditions, dietary concerns, and/or behavioral problems. Excellent communication skills. Good leadership skills. Creative and energetic. Must be physically able to operate common office equipment such as personal computers, typewriters, copiers, calculators; work involves both sitting and standing; requires regular and at times sustained performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking, running, bending, stooping, kneeling, leaping, jumping, standing in place, lifting and carrying moderate to heavy items (including people) consistently; occasional lifting of boxes not heavier than 15–20 pounds.
