Facility Maintenance Technician I

Maryland Department of Transportation

Description

INTERVIEW AND HIRE POSITION

(All eligible candidates will be invited to interview based upon standardized MDTA organizational criteria.)

***Please scroll to the bottom of this announcement to review Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)***

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes, across the State of Maryland. For over 50 years, the MDTA has provided Maryland's citizens and visitors with safe, secure, and convenient transportation facilities. We are committed to quality and excellence in customer service, and we rely on our organization's values, traditions, and - most importantly - our employees to achieve these goals.

Nature of Work: This is the entry-level of maintenance and construction work on facilities such as bridges, buildings, bulkheads, highways, parking areas, piers, railroads, ramps, roads, taxiways, tunnels, or adjacent areas of the MDTA. Employees utilize tools, operate motorized equipment, and perform manual tasks essential to the upkeep and appearance of a facility. Employees work independently or as members of a crew.

This is maintenance work requiring physical exertion, which is performed either outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MDTA building. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds and may also be required to work at high elevations or perform their job in cramped quarters in buildings or underground.

Employees in this position receive guidance from a Facility Maintenance Technician IV or other designated official and general supervision from a Facility Maintenance Supervisor I or other designated official.

This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies throughout the MDTA in Baltimore City, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Cecil, Harford, Charles, and Prince George's counties.

This position will serve a 12-month probationary period.

Employees in this class are considered "Essential Employees" and are subject to call-in 24 hours a day, as may be required in order to maintain continuous and safe operation of a facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shift work, to include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

MDTA employees are offered a generous benefits package including: a minimum of 11 paid holidays, a minimum of 27* days of leave annually (personal, vacation, and sick), access to the State Pension System, deferred compensation plans, excellent health, dental, and vision plans, and more! *May be prorated based upon start date.

Additionally, the Facility Maintenance Technician I classification is part of a proficiency progression series. After all required benchmarks are met and certifications are passed, the employee may be advanced to the Facility Maintenance Technician II and Facility Maintenance Technician III classifications. This results in significant growth both monetarily and in the level of duties performed.

Frequently Asked Questions

QUESTION: How will I be contacted about my application status?
ANSWER: All communication regarding your application will be sent via email only to the address listed on your application. It is your responsibility to ensure the email address is accurate and to regularly monitor your inbox, including spam or junk folders. Due to the volume of applications received, individual status updates cannot be provided unless you are selected to move forward.

QUESTION: Do I need a CDL to apply or be hired?
ANSWER: No. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is not required at the time of application or hire. However, during the probationary period, employees will be required to obtain and maintain a valid Class A or B CDL (depending on the equipment operated), along with a valid U.S. DOT Medical Card (or MVA-issued waiver). Failure to obtain or maintain the required CDL and medical certification may result in separation from employment.

QUESTION : I've applied, now what?
ANSWER : You will be contacted to interview if you have met the minimum requirements for the position and if there are any current or projected vacancies in the locations you indicated you would like to be considered for.

QUESTION : I've applied but haven't received an interview yet. When will I be interviewed?
ANSWER : You will be interviewed if you meet the minimum requirements for the position and there are any current or projected vacancies in the areas you indicated you would like to be considered for. Since this recruitment is for all MDTA facilities, some facilities may not have vacancies at the time of application.

QUESTION : I've interviewed, now what?
ANSWER : If you are selected to move forward, you will be contacted and provided with next steps, which may include a background investigation and medical screening through Concentra. Completion of these steps does not guarantee an immediate job offer, as offers are contingent upon vacancy availability in the locations you selected.

QUESTION : I can't make it to/missed my Concentra appointment. What should I do?
ANSWER : Contact the Concentra location directly where your appointment was scheduled to be conducted. Also, inform the HR representative who you worked with to schedule your appointment.

QUESTION : I've completed everything and still haven't received a job offer. Should I be concerned?
ANSWER : Several factors can affect the timing of a job offer, including:
  • Background investigation still in progress
  • No current vacancies in the facility locations you selected
  • Pending or additional medical evaluations identified during screening
  • Staffing or operational needs changing at the facility level
Candidates remain eligible for 6 months and may be contacted when a suitable vacancy becomes available.

QUESTION : How long will I wait for a start date?
ANSWER : This is largely dependent on what facilities have current vacancies and how quickly you complete all the steps of the recruitment process. It is critical that you quickly schedule any fingerprinting or medical screenings and return all paperwork as soon as you can.
