ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYST

Overview Environmental Analyst – Department of Public Works, City of Worcester. The position supports the Sewer Operations Division with emphasis on stormwater and water quality. Under the direction of the Stormwater and Wastewater Coordinator, this entry-level role involves field sampling, field testing of stormwater outfalls, inspections of sewer infrastructure, data review, research on sewer-related issues, and customer inquiries. The Environmental Analyst participates in the DPW education program by preparing materials and delivering presentations on water quality issues. This role requires work with minimal supervision in both office and field settings. Note: Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply. Essential Elements Assist sewer operations staff in preparing reports, collecting, analyzing, and entering data, and conducting research to support environmentally related DPW programs. Review water quality data. Research sewer-related issues as they arise. Enter water quality test results in an online database. Complete field work such as collection of water or soil samples for lab analysis by others, field testing of stormwater outfalls, and inspections of lands, facilities, and sewer/drain infrastructure for potential pollution sources. Implement the Department’s stormwater management plan. Secondary Elements Participate in DPW’s youth education program by assisting in materials preparation and delivering presentations to students or local groups. Assist in preparing regulatory reports required by federal and state environmental agencies. Assist in data entry and preparation of statistical reports used to track surface water quality. Use appropriate test kits to monitor specific water quality parameters in the field. Conduct internet and library research to support recommendations for environmental program improvements. Assist in preparing informative brochures and fliers on DPW environmental issues. Performs related work as required. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Basic knowledge of environmental issues. Excellent verbal and written communication. Self-motivated and able to work independently. Creative thinking and willingness to suggest program and operational improvements. Ability to read and interpret regulations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with staff and the public. Ability to use, maintain, and calibrate field-testing equipment. Competence with computers, especially MS Word and Excel. Must be willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Public speaking abilities and willingness to present to groups. Must possess a valid Driver’s license. Regular onsite attendance is required. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training, and three years of relevant experience. Valid Driver’s license. Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent verbal and written communication. Preferred Qualifications Two years of experience taking water and/or soil samples. Two years of experience with using, maintaining, and calibrating field-testing equipment. One year of experience interpreting environmental laws, rules and regulations. Experience with ArcGIS. Experience in public presentation of environmental issues. Municipal work experience or familiarity with state and federal environmental regulations. Experience with asset management software. Salary Range $28.09 - $36.63 hourly, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
