Controller – Affordable Housing (Hybrid) - Midtown Real Estate Firm - $150k-215k+B A well-established real estate firm with a large portfolio with over 12k units is seeking a hands‑on Controller to oversee accounting and financial operations across a portfolio of residential assets, with a strong preference for candidates who have experience within affordable housing, subsidized housing, or highly regulated real estate environments. This is a highly visible role reporting directly to the CFO and working closely with property operations, asset management, and executive stakeholders. The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in real estate accounting, property management finance, team leadership, and financial reporting, along with the ability to operate in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment. Responsibilities Oversee accounting and financial reporting for a large, multi-property real estate portfolio. Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, including reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, variance analysis, and financial statements. Supervise and mentor a small accounting team, ensuring accurate work and timely deliverables. Partner with the CFO and leadership on budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, reporting, and portfolio performance. Work with property management, regional operations, and asset management teams to resolve accounting issues and support decision-making. Use Yardi for property accounting, financial reporting, system workflows, and portfolio-level reporting. Support accounting and compliance for affordable housing programs, including LIHTC, HUD, Project-Based Section 8, rent-regulated housing, and other subsidized programs. Review financial statements, operating reports, bank reconciliations, receivables, payables, and general ledger activity. Improve accounting processes, internal controls, reporting, and overall portfolio accounting operations. Coordinate with auditors, tax preparers, lenders, regulatory agencies, and other outside partners. Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, lender requirements, regulatory guidelines, and affordable housing obligations. Provide ad hoc financial analysis, reporting, and project support to the CFO and executive team. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. Strong accounting and finance background within real estate, property management, or a related industry. Affordable housing experience is a must have, including exposure to LIHTC, HUD, Project-Based Section 8, subsidized housing, rent-regulated housing, or similar programs. Experience with Yardi, MRI or similar real estate accounting software. Prior supervisory or team leadership experience required.
