Controller | Brooklyn, NY | Onsite for 2-3 weeks then Hybrid (3 days onsite) | Pay Rate: $100-$150/hr | Salary upon conversion: $200,000-$225,000 About the role A well-established Brooklyn nonprofit with $82M in annual revenue is seeking a hands‑on Controller to bring structure and accountability to its accounting operations. This is a leadership role overseeing a team of 6‑10, working directly with the CFO and four Social Services VPs, with a mandate to modernise the close process, streamline audits, and serve as a true operational finance partner. What you'll actually do Own the month‑end close process – establishing timelines, templates, and follow‑up mechanisms to ensure deadlines are consistently met. Lead and streamline the external audit process, reducing back‑and‑forth and improving efficiency. Oversee grant billing, grant accounting, and operational accounting across complex, multi‑stream funding. Partner with Social Services leadership on compliance, invoicing, budget modifications, and contract administration. Leverage NetSuite and Yardi to improve reporting, efficiency, and overall accounting operations. Manage and develop a team of 6‑10 across grant reporting, grant accounting, and staff accounting functions. What we're looking for 5+ years of nonprofit controllership experience Hands‑on experience with NetSuite and/or Yardi Strong background in grant accounting, grant billing, and working with NYC funding agencies Audit management experience – both preparation and auditor relationship management Advanced Excel skills Comfortable balancing strategic leadership with operational execution A large, mission‑driven nonprofit headquartered in Bushwick with over 50 years of community impact across housing, health, education, and social services. The finance team is lean relative to the organization’s size and complexity, so this role carries real weight – the Controller will be setting the tone for how the department operates going forward. Direct report to the CFO with broad visibility across the organization.
