Exceptional Children Program Specialist- Special Programs

Starting Date: Immediately Job Description Title: Exceptional Children Program Specialist Reports To: Executive Director of Exceptional Children’s Programs Terms of Employment: 12 months Salary: Teacher Salary Schedule FLSA Status: EXEMPT Under general supervision, performs professional work to coordinate activities of Exceptional Children’s Services for Orange County Schools, focused on behavior and Autism Spectrum Disorders. The purpose is to assist schools and teachers in understanding students exhibiting behaviors that impede academic success, coaching staff in Functional Behavior Assessments, implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans, IEP goals, data collection, and de‑escalation strategies. The program specialist consults schools and parents, leads behavior and autism initiatives, guides IEP teams, and ensures compliance with federal and state requirements. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field (required) Master’s degree in Special Education (preferred) Current licensure in General Education (preferred) Experience with Multi‑tier System of Supports Minimum 5 years of teaching experience with students with Autism or behavior disorders Essential Job Functions Provide coaching/consultation to school personnel, behavior liaisons, and support assistants regarding behavioral support for students. Monitor PRC 29 students, complete documentation of support provided. Support development and implementation of IEP, FBA, and BIP for PRC 29 and therapeutic classroom students. Attend IEP meetings as needed. Conduct classroom observations, provide feedback on evidence‑based strategies, and ensure interventions are research‑based. Collect and analyze data on student behavior. Provide training on evidence‑based practices to school staff and behavior support staff. Coach behavior technicians, consult with supervisor on their performance. Collaborate with supervisor to prepare required documents for PRC 29. Enter required data into ECATS for PRC 29 students. Maintain Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) trainer certification. Develop and implement a district‑wide behavior/autism problem‑solving team. Attend professional development as required. Perform other duties as deemed necessary by supervisor. District Initiatives Ongoing professional development on application of the general education curriculum to students with disabilities in behavior and autism, including PRC 29. Audits of Special Education files with follow‑up monitoring and professional development. Additional Duties and Responsibilities Provide professional development to school‑based staff on a variety of topics as requested. Physical and Cognitive Requirements Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force to move objects; classified as light work. CPI certification training may require physically restraining or assisting a student at imminent risk; physical restraint is only a last resort.
