The role involves creating a flexible program and learning environment that integrates the general education curriculum with supplemental supports. Key responsibilities include developing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), designing lesson plans, adapting materials, monitoring progress, and maintaining compliance with state and federal guidelines. Minimum Qualifications Considering knowledge of principles and application of theory into practice for effective instruction and positive behavioral supports for students with disabilities. In-depth understanding of OCS curriculum and instructional strategies (general curriculum and adapted curriculum). Knowledge of human behavior, development, and skill performance. Awareness of individual differences in ability, personality, and interests. Experience with student learning, motivation techniques, and behavior assessment. Thorough knowledge of OCS policies and effective instructional practices. Ability to provide positive behavioral support in group and individual settings. Knowledge of federal, state, and local mandates governing special education services. Experience conducting IEP meetings and creating relevant IEPs. Experience completing initial eligibility and reevaluation processes. Strong collaboration skills with administrators, staff, parents, and community members. Education, Training, and Experience Bachelor’s degree in an accredited program in special education. Experience working with students with special needs. Any equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Certification and License Requirements Valid NC certification in Exceptional Children or eligibility to receive certification. Valid North Carolina driver’s license. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in special education. 3–5 years of experience teaching students with special needs. Spanish speaking proficiency. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Provide direct and indirect instructional support in a positive environment. Employ educational strategies to enhance sensory, motor, language, cognition, and memory development. Instruct students in academic subjects using phonetics, multisensory learning, and repetition techniques. Teach socially acceptable behavior as defined in IEPs. Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities. Plan and conduct balanced instructional activities promoting observation, questioning, and investigation. Establish and enforce behavior and environmental rules conducive to learning. Meet with parents to discuss progress and priorities. Collaborate with parents, administrators, specialists, and other professionals to develop IEPs. Initiate and monitor reevaluation for eligibility. Maintain confidential, accurate student records and prepare reports required by law and policy. Set clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects with effective communication. Develop communication, monitoring, and follow‑up plans for inclusive classrooms. Provide crisis intervention as needed. Assist in collecting data for classroom interventions. Serve as a multidisciplinary team member. Assist with data preparation for local, state, and federal reports. Maintain professional competence through development activities. Perform other duties assigned by the principal. Collect data for functional behavior assessments and develop behavior intervention plans. Collaborate with therapeutic staff on treatment implementation. Facilitate transition planning for student discharge and re‑entry. Work with multi‑disciplinary teams and community agencies to support educational and therapeutic plans. Provide supervision during off‑campus outings. Serve as case coordinator and consult with care‑givers and support professionals. Apply CPI techniques when necessary for student and community safety. Working Conditions Physical Demands: Medium physical work including lifting up to 50 pounds, walking, bending, standing, and occasional interventions such as moving students or using specialized equipment. Work Environment: Indoor and outdoor environments with contact with students, staff, and the public.
