North Shore Locals Ornaments is looking to hire a skilled painter that enjoys fine detailed work and has an attention to detail for part time work.You will be working with the artist in their home studio to prepare and paint wooden pieces for custom projects and original designs for sale on their website and for local markets. The ideal candidate is experienced with fine detail work (think very small liner brushes) and water based paints. This person can take feedback well and enjoys locking in on a task. Tasks & Schedule details: Preparing wooden pieces for final painting (this includes some sanding, cleaning and applying glaze). Fine detail painting that is set up assembly line style – all of one color on a piece is completed on all pieces before moving onto the next step, and you are usually working on 15-20 pieces at a time. It is admittedly very repetitive. Some light clean up duties in the studio mostly surrounding the desk that you’re working at (keeping things clean, making sure brushes are clean and put away properly, paint stored properly after use etc). Occasionally maybe helping with more rigorous studio clean up and organization projects. Helping with market prep – prepping bags & packing materials, making sure market bins are properly stocked with the right things, etc. Miscellaneous – folding tissue for packaging, applying price tags to finished pieces, tying ribbons onto finished pieces, etc. Potentially in the future we are looking for someone to help with markets – this wouldn’t be until the spring time next year. Someone either with this experience or open to it would be our preference and would also require the occasional Saturday or Sunday. Hours can vary but will need to fall between the hours of 10am and 1:30pm Monday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday while training and learning the ropes – once more comfortable working solo there can be more flexibility on schedule but all work does need to be completed in the studio. You can expect 6 – 8 hours a week to start with a possible increase especially around the holidays. This is year round business so we are looking to hire someone to stay with us for year round work, however hours may flex depending on how busy we are. Skills needed: Must be comfortable with using small brushes and can accurately and quickly paint pieces. Think extreme paint by number. Attention to detail is a must – we want to be able to compare our finished pieces to yours and to not be able to tell the difference. You do not need to be completely at our pace or skill level to begin, so long as you are willing to learn and can take direction well. Easy going to work with. We prefer to work with headphones on and will encourage you to do the same. We obviously want to work alongside someone that we like but we will both work more effectively if we’re staying focused and not chatting. Someone who enjoys tedious work and won’t be distracted by their phone. When you’re working there’s not much downtime and you’d likely only have be in here for 3 to 4 hours at a time anyway. We value creativity and problem solving – however, this is not what you’d call a very ‘creative’ job. You are reproducing our designs only. Kind, considerate and critical thinker. North Shore Locals Ornaments is a local Beverly based small business that makes wooden hand painted Christmas ornaments inspired by home grown small businesses and local landmarks throughout the North Shore. The owner Hayley Doyon has been making and selling artwork from her home studio for years and has experience in decorative house painting, scenic theater painting, and high end house painting. She graduated with a BFA with a concentration in painting from RISD in 2008. She is also a busy mom to two young boys and an active member of the Beverly community, working in partnership with The Cabot Theater on their social media content team and co-hosts a podcast recorded at Bev Cam called Small Biz Forever Pod with another local business owner who owns a candle company and gift shop in downtown Beverly. Start date would be mid September and candidates will be asked to come in for a ‘practical’ interview where you’ll be given some stuff to work on within the next couple of weeks to see if it’s a good fit.
