Janitor/Custodian/Handy Person

Essential job duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

• Maintain a safe environment at all times for all personnel.
• Perform safety-related inspections and activities such as removing snow, salting walkways, removing debris from walkways, cleaning up spills, clearing clutter to prevent falls, reporting potential or actual safety hazards promptly, etc.
• Ensure all chemicals, cleansers, etc. are properly labeled stored, and used according to safety instructions.
• Follow the instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed.
• Wear proper Personal Protective Equipment at all times.
• Vacuum, sweep, and mop floors and stairs. Maintain non-slip floors and stairs.
• Strip, clean, buff, and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets as needed.
• Clean and sanitize bathrooms using established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
• Clean and sanitize sinks, countertops, microwaves, and refrigerators in break rooms.
• Clean windowsills and windows. Clean accessible interior and exterior windows.
• Dust and clean office desks and furniture that are not cluttered.
• Thoroughly vacuum offices at least weekly.
• Empty all trash cans and replace liners, and clean receptacles as necessary.
• Assist with the setup and breakdown of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
• Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools as needed.
• Maintain janitor closets, storage, and equipment in a clean, organized, and safe manner.
• Restock supplies in bathrooms, break rooms, and common areas.
• Ensure all janitorial equipment and tools are properly maintained, repaired, and serviced as needed.
• Take training as required in safety, cleaning methods and techniques, new products, First Aid, AED, and CPR as needed.
• Support and enforce all policies of BGCGCO, OSHA rules, and health and safety regulations and guidelines.

Handy person duties:

• Perform minor repairs or installations to walls, floors, ceiling, windows, plumbing, electrical and other structural and functional components of the facility.
• Apply paint or otherwise upgrade and improve the look and function of the facility as needed.
• General maintenance of grounds including cutting grass, removing debris, improving fencing, gates, access to/from the facility, and removing potential safety risks.
• Handle recycling materials.

Desired qualifications and experience:

• At least one year of janitorial/custodial/maintenance work experience.

Required qualifications and experience:

• At least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to perform high school-level arithmetic calculations and reading comprehension.
• Legally eligible to work in the United States.
• A valid Indiana driver's license and be able to drive an automobile.
• Reliable transportation to and from work, to program locations, and for activities such as meetings, classes, and workshops in and out of the area.
• Pass a criminal records background check and a 10-panel drug screen.
• Maintain current 1st Aid and CPR certification.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Maintain emotional self-control when under personal stress.
• Accurately assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stress, within deadlines, and in emergencies.
• Understand and carry out instructions and procedures with minimal supervision.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing using correct English.
• Exhibit excellent relationship-building skills with all levels of employees and management.

Physical requirements:

• The work requires routine walking, standing, bending, lifting, and carrying items.
• Ability to adapt to inclement weather conditions and/or situations.
• Ability to move easily across a variety of indoor and outdoor surfaces;
• Possess the strength and agility to climb stairs, lift, and carry 25 pounds at least 20 feet.
• Possess the speech, vision, and hearing functions necessary to respond effectively to emergencies.
• Capable of performing physically and mentally in a reasonable manner all essential job responsibilities, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
