Position Assistant Public Defender – Public Defender's Office, First Circuit (Agency: Office of the Public Defender, First Judicial Circuit). Immediate hire. Salary starts at $70,000 minimum, increasing with experience. Locations Escambia County Santa Rosa County Okaloosa County Walton County Responsibilities Provide legal counsel to defendants unable to afford a lawyer, appointed by court. Act as trial counsel representing defendants during courtroom proceedings. Research case law to support defense strategies. Communicate with defendants to determine trial strategy, including cross‑examination procedures, witness selection, jury selection, testimony decisions, and opening and closing arguments.
