Job Title Transportation Maintenance Specialist 2 – Highway Maintenance Specialist Overview Join our hardworking Portland maintenance crew and help keep Oregon’s roads and travelers safe! Key Responsibilities Operate heavy and light equipment and tools to maintain and repair roadways, highways, bridges, and related structures. Assist with weather‑related emergencies: operate snowplows, deicer trucks, and other equipment to clear snow from roadways. Perform minor surface repairs, including pothole and concrete patching, small inlay work. Clear debris, brush, mow grass, and spray roadside vegetation. Maintain fences, guardrails, concrete barriers, and milepost markers. Maintain drainage systems: dig and clean ditches, repair culverts, inlets, and erosion control structures. Maintain wooded areas: replant, prune, thin or trim trees, shrubs, and groundcover. Service and repair tools and motorized equipment. Perform minor maintenance such as janitorial work, landscaping, painting, and light carpentry. Handle exposure to noise, extreme heights, all‑weather conditions, heavy equipment, pesticides, and hazardous waste materials. Move around rough terrain, bend and stoop for extended periods; lift up to 60pounds. Be available after hours, on weekends and holidays for emergency, on‑call and weather‑related duties. Qualifications Minimum of one year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work, OR two years of general landscaping, maintenance, mechanical, farming, logging, and/or construction experience or training. Current, valid commercial driver’s license (CDL‑A) with tanker endorsement and no air‑brake, 5th‑wheel, or manual‑transmission restrictions; OR ability to obtain a class‑A commercial learner permit within 60days of hire and a CDL‑A with tanker endorsement and restrictions removed within six months of hire. Ability to respond within a maximum 45‑minute response time to emergency call‑outs. Valid driver license and acceptable driving record; must pass federal motor‑carrier safety administration (FMCSA) background check. Physical ability to perform tasks described above. Desired Attributes Experience in road maintenance, construction, or completion of a maintenance training program (e.g., ODOT High School to Highway program, ODOT/ODF Fire and Ice program, Job Corps). Light and heavy equipment experience. Basic mechanical repair skills on light and heavy fleet vehicles. Current CDL‑A preferred.
