High Voltage Transmission Lead Technician

Commissioned in 1991, the Long Island Sound Cable is a 345 kV underground transmission system spanning 26.3 miles between Yonkers and Long Island. The system includes the South Transition Station and associated high-voltage infrastructure supporting reliable power delivery across the New York metropolitan area. Opportunity Summary The High Voltage Transmission Lead Technician inspects, maintains, and repairs high-voltage transmission lines, towers, and related equipment to ensure safe and reliable system performance. This role coordinates emergency response and restoration efforts with NYPA, contractors, and field crews, while overseeing testing, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance to minimize outages and maintain system reliability. Compensation This position offers a base pay rate of $70.34 per hour. Your scope of responsibility as High Voltage Transmission Lead Technician includes the following primary functions: Conduct routine inspections of high-voltage transmission lines, towers, and associated equipment to identify defects, evaluate asset condition, and maintain system reliability. Plan, coordinate, and oversee preventative, corrective, and emergency maintenance activities, including storm restoration and repair or replacement of conductors, insulators, line hardware, and related equipment. Supervise transmission system testing, diagnostics, fault analysis, and protective relay verification to identify issues and ensure reliable system performance. Coordinate vegetation management and right-of-way (ROW) maintenance activities to maintain required clearances and support safe, reliable transmission operations. Lead field crews, contractors, and maintenance activities to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established procedures and project schedules. Ensure accurate documentation of inspections, maintenance activities, equipment condition, and work history within CMMS and asset management systems, including Maximo. Assign, prioritize, and monitor work orders while analyzing maintenance data to improve planning, asset performance, and operational efficiency. Collaborate with maintenance teams and stakeholders to develop and optimize maintenance schedules that maximize equipment availability and minimize downtime. Monitor maintenance expenditures, identify cost-saving opportunities, and support annual budget development through asset planning, forecasting, and lifecycle cost analysis. Promote a strong safety culture by enforcing lockout/tagout (LOTO), PPE requirements, incident reporting, field safety standards, and participation in safety training. Ensure compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and industry standards while supporting the safe, reliable operation of high-voltage transmission and substation assets. Working Relationships The High Voltage Transmission Lead Technician reports to the Plant Manager and coordinates with all plant and transmission personnel. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Physical requirements include standing and walking for extended periods, climbing stairs and fixed ladders within substations and transition stations, and working from elevated platforms, cable structures, and access ways at varying heights. Work may also require routine lifting of tools, equipment, and components up to 50 pounds. Work is performed in high-voltage transmission and substation environments, including underground and below-grade facilities such as cable vaults, manholes, and duct systems associated with 345 kV infrastructure. Duties may involve proximity to energized equipment, including transformers, shunt reactors, and underground transmission systems, with strict adherence to electrical safety and switching procedures. Employees may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, confined spaces, noise, and industrial hazards including energized electrical equipment and oil-filled systems. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) may include arc-rated clothing, hard hats, safety glasses, voltage-rated gloves, dielectric footwear, hearing protection, and fall protection, with fit testing and site-specific safety training as required. Strict access control and smoking restrictions apply within all facilities. Fitness for Duty All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening. Work Schedule The High Voltage Transmission Lead Technician primarily works a Monday-Friday day shift. Extended hours, weekends, holidays, and on-call duty may be required based on workload, maintenance schedules, outages, and operational needs. Technical Competencies and Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in electrical technology or a related technical field preferred. 5-6 years of experience in high-voltage transmission line inspection, maintenance, repair, and emergency restoration. Strong knowledge of transmission system components, including conductors, insulators, towers, grounding systems, and related equipment. Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting transmission system faults, outages, insulation issues, and equipment failures. Understanding of electrical fundamentals, including grounding, insulation coordination, and protective relaying. Experience coordinating field maintenance with utilities, contractors, and other transmission stakeholders. Demonstrated commitment to high-voltage safety practices, including lockout/tagout, PPE, and hazard controls. Experience leading field crews and coordinating multiple maintenance activities. Proficiency with CMMS or asset management systems (e.g., Maximo) for work order management and maintenance documentation. Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
