Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/Stepdown) position requiring telemetry interpretation skills, ACLS/NIHSS certifications, and a minimum 50-mile radius from the facility.

Details

• Acute care stepdown/PCU unit in a hospital setting
• 28-bed unit with a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio (CNAs available at 1:14)
• Patient population consists of adults with mixed medical/surgical, cardiac, and stroke diagnoses — many arriving through the ER
• RNs are required to read and interpret telemetry monitoring; telemetry techs are available on the unit
• RNs are required to titrate drips including heparin, octreotide, and insulin, as well as administer set-rate IV maintenance medications
• Specialty equipment on unit includes code carts, LUCAS machines, Hoyer lifts, and sit-and-stand devices
• Charting via Epic EMR
• 12-hour day shifts, 0630–1900; night shift option available 1830–0700
• Every other weekend required
• Holiday rotation shared with permanent staff
• Floating required to Med/Surg and other hospital areas including ICU and ED based on abilities
• 6-week scheduling cycle managed by unit schedulers

Requirements

• Active NE state or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
• Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS — pending certifications not accepted
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
• BSN not required
• Ability to read and interpret telemetry rhythms
• Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility (driver's license used to verify permanent address)
• Candidates may not currently be employed full-time, part-time, or PRN at any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility (including CHI or Dignity)
• 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
• Valid driver's license required for consideration

Additional Information

• Orientation consists of one week of classroom training followed by two 12-hour shifts of unit-specific orientation
• A pass/fail open-book exam is administered on the Friday of orientation week covering skills learned during orientation — a score of 90% or higher is required to continue the assignment
• This is a high-volume unit with frequent admissions, transfers, and discharges — strong teamwork and adaptability are essential
• Unit support includes a charge nurse (who carries an assignment), CNAs, a unit secretary 2–3 days/week, and a stocking clerk 3 days/week
• Navy blue scrubs required; artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas
• RTO must be submitted upfront — up to 7 days per 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved after consideration
• Candidates who were previously employed directly (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year are not eligible; those who worked PRN through an outside staffing firm may be considered
