Job description for Teacher – Johnston County Public Schools Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability – Smithfield, North Carolina. Starting date: immediately. Job Description SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants. PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development. Duties and Responsibilities A. Major Function: Management of Instructional Time The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task. B. Major Function: Management of Student Behavior The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, for student verbal participation, and for student movement; frequently monitors all students; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, yet maintains the dignity of the student. C. Major Function: Instructional Presentation The teacher begins with a review of previous materials, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, presents concepts in a comprehensible manner, provides examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks, asks appropriate questions, conducts the lesson at a brisk pace, makes smooth transitions, and summarizes the main points at the end. D. Major Function: Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance The teacher maintains clear standards and due dates; circulates during class work to check performance; uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress; poses clear, one‑at‑a‑time questions. E. Major Function: Instructional Feedback The teacher provides timely feedback on in‑class and out‑of‑class work, affirms correct responses, and offers sustaining feedback after incorrect responses. F. Major Function: Facilitating Instruction The teacher has an instructional plan compatible with school and system‑wide goals; uses diagnostic information to develop and revise objectives; maintains accurate records; uses available resources to support instruction. G. Major Function: Interacting Within the Educational Environment The teacher treats all students fairly and interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community. H. Major Function: Performing Non‑Instructional Duties The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws, policies, and regulations, follows a professional development plan, and demonstrates growth. Additional Job Functions: Performs other related work as required. Minimum Training and Experience Degree in education or in a related area qualifying for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Verbal Aptitude Ability to record, deliver, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions; communicate in technical languages. Numerical Aptitude Ability to use formulas, perform arithmetic, percentages, and basic statistics. Form/Spatial Aptitude Ability to inspect items for correct dimensions. Motor Coordination Ability to coordinate hands and eyes for office equipment. Manual Dexterity Ability to handle various items with minimal eye/hand/foot coordination. Color Discrimination Ability to differentiate colors and shades. Interpersonal Temperament Ability to handle people beyond instructions; adaptable to stress and emergencies. Physical Communication Ability to talk, hear, and communicate by telephone. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Constantly monitor student safety and well‑being in inclusive activities. Motivate students. Maintain a clean and orderly environment; perform general clerical duties. Maintain order and discipline. Operate common office machines. Maintain basic files and records. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
