フライトアテンダントは、安全規則に従い、乗客が快適に、楽しく過ごせるような機内空間を提供する。出発１時間前には、機長から非常時対処法、乗務員の状態、フライト時間、予想される天候、乗客への特別な手助けの有無などの報告を受ける。救急箱を始めとする必要な物や、機内食、飲み物、アメニティーなどを配置する。 乗客に挨拶を交わし、チケットを確認してシートまで誘導、離陸前には乗客にシートベルトや安全器具などの使い方を説明し、非常時に備える。飲み物や機内食を提供するとともに、乗客の飛行に関する質問に答え、枕やブランケット、読み物を配り、乗客の健康状態に気を遣い、子供やシニア、身体障害者を手助けする。 着陸後は乗客を降ろし、医療レポートを記入したり、紛失物、破損物のチェックを行う。フライト時間のほとんどを立って過ごし、夜間・休日など関係なく働くのが現状。
■トレーニング
フライトアテンダントになるには高校卒業が最低条件だが、最近では大学卒業を条件にしている航空会社が増えている。国際線のアテンダントになるには外国語の習得が必須。会社に雇用されると３～８週間のトレーニングがあり、そこで必要な知識（避難手順、必要器具や設備の使い方、応急処置、ハイジャックやテロリストへの対処法など）を学ばなければならない。 2006年５月における全米のフライトアテンダントの人数は９万6760人で、カリフォルニア州では１万1090人。大手航空会社の雇用がほとんどを占めている。 2006年５月における全米のフライトアテンダントの平均年収は５万6150ドル。中間層50％の平均年収は５万3780ドル、下層10％は２万4250ドル、トップ10％は９万9300ドル。カリフォルニア州の平均年収は５万920ドルである。 Lighthouseのメールマガジンライトハウスの最新情報やクーポンなどのオトク情報をメールでお届け！（詳細はこちら ）
