Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Pharmacoepidemiology
Department of Epidemiology and Population Health
Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine
Stanford University The Department of Epidemiology & Population Health and the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative & Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine invite applications for a joint faculty position in pharmacoepidemiology at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, in the University Tenure Line, University Medical Line, or Non-Tenure Research Line, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The predominant criterion for appointment in the University Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching. The major criteria for appointment for faculty in the University Medical Line shall be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine, and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill. The major criterion for appointment for faculty in the Non-tenure Line (Research) is evidence of high-level performance as a researcher for whose special knowledge a programmatic need exists. Faculty rank and line will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Primary department will also be determined upon offer of hire. We seek candidates with expertise in pharmacoepidemiology and real world evidence to study the safety, effectiveness, and utilization of medications across a range of clinical and population settings. All clinical areas of focus in pharmacoepidemiology are of interest including (but not limited to) cardiovascular, metabolic, perinatal, pediatric, infectious disease, analgesics, substance use disorder. Investigators focusing on methods development are also of interest. The successful candidate will have a primary appointment in Epidemiology & Population Health and a joint appointment in Anesthesiology, Perioperative & Pain Medicine (or vice versa, depending on background), and will be expected to develop an independent, externally funded research program; collaborate across disciplines; and contribute to teaching and mentoring. Research The ideal candidate will have a strong record (or clear potential, for junior applicants) in: Designing and conducting observational pharmacoepidemiologic studies using large health care databases (e.g., electronic health records, administrative claims, registries, perioperative and ICU data, pharmacy data). Developing and/or applying advanced epidemiologic and quantitative methods (e.g., causal inference, comparative effectiveness, confounding control) to questions related to drug safety and effectiveness. Collaborating with faculty in Epidemiology & Population Health, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, and other clinical and data science units across Stanford Medicine. Resources The Departments of Epidemiology & Population Health and Anesthesiology, Perioperative & Pain Medicine offer robust infrastructure to support pharmacoepidemiologic research. In particular, the Center for Population Health provides access to large electronic health record datasets, administrative claims, disease registries, and linked population based cohorts, creating an exceptional environment for real world medication safety and effectiveness studies in perioperative, critical care, and pain settings. Teaching and mentoring The successful candidate will: Teach in graduate or professional programs in epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, and/or clinical research methods. Contribute to training programs in both departments (e.g., mentoring MD/MS/PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinical fellows in medicine or related fields). Help build methodologic capacity in pharmacoepidemiology and real world evidence among trainees and faculty. Service Faculty are expected to engage in service to both departments and the School of Medicine, including participation in committees, working groups, and program development, commensurate with rank. Qualifications Doctoral degree (PhD, ScD, DrPH, or equivalent) in epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, biostatistics, health services research, pharmaceutical outcomes, or a related field; or MD/PharmD with substantial training in epidemiology or quantitative methods. Demonstrated expertise in pharmacoepidemiologic study design and analysis of large health care datasets; experience with perioperative, ICU, pain, or related clinical data is highly desirable. Evidence of research productivity commensurate with rank, including peer reviewed publications and, for more senior candidates, a record of independent research funding. Commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, and fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment across departments. Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Candidates may choose to include as part of their research and teaching statements a brief discussion about how their work and experience will further these values.
