Lead Fleet Mechanic

Summary

The Lead Fleet Mechanic is responsible for maintaining the district's buses and fleet vehicles in a safe, reliable, and efficient operating condition to support uninterrupted transportation services for the educational program. This position oversees fleet maintenance operations, supervises technicians, manages shop organization and inventory, and ensures compliance with all safety and governmental regulations.

Responsibilities

Fleet Maintenance & Operations

• Coordinate maintenance and repair schedules to ensure buses and fleet vehicles are operational and ready to meet transportation requirements.
• Supervise and assist technicians in diagnosing malfunctions and performing repairs on buses, engines, transmissions, and other vehicle components.
• Oversee preventive maintenance schedules and ensure timely completion of inspections and repairs.
• Maintain and analyze vehicle maintenance records and repair documentation.
• Review time, labor, and parts usage for repairs and maintain inventory at required levels.

Purchasing & Equipment Management

• Purchase parts, materials, and supplies necessary for the maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and shop facilities.
• Recommend and assist with short- and long-term fleet replacement and bus purchase planning.
• Evaluate shop equipment needs and recommend purchases of new or replacement tools, machinery, and related equipment.
• Assist in evaluating bids and recommending vendor selections.

Shop Oversight & Compliance

• Ensure cleanliness, organization, safety, and security of the maintenance shop, equipment, and parts inventory.
• Oversee proper disposal, reporting, and record-keeping of hazardous materials in accordance with governmental regulations.
• Evaluate the performance of shop personnel and support staff development.
• Maintain compliance with district policies, safety standards, and applicable transportation regulations.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the automotive technician field required.
• At least one (1) year of full-time experience as a journeyman technician in a truck or bus maintenance facility required.
• Supervisory experience in an automotive maintenance facility preferred.
• Experience using diagnostic equipment and computerized maintenance systems preferred.
• Master Heavy-duty Truck Mechanic or ASE Certification is required or ability to obtain.

Certifications & Licenses

• Valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong knowledge of bus and fleet vehicle maintenance, repair procedures, and preventive maintenance practices.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance manuals, and technical documents.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to calculate figures and apply basic mathematical concepts including percentages, proportions, algebra, and geometry.
• Ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues and solve practical problems efficiently.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, parents, and community members.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and maintain awareness of district policies and procedures.

• Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and tools, and communicate verbally.
• Frequently required to reach, squat, stoop, kneel, and lift or move items up to 50 pounds.
• Continuous use of hand strength and tools required.
• Must possess close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision abilities.

Work Environment

• Regular exposure to moving mechanical equipment and buses.
• Frequent exposure to petroleum products, degreasers, fumes, gases, sprays, and other chemicals.
• Occasional outdoor work and exposure to weather conditions and airborne particles.
• Ability to work under time constraints and meet deadlines in a loud shop environment.

Compensation & Benefits

Position Type: Full-Time, 52-Week (Year-Round)
Start Date: Immediately
Wage Range: $25.00 - 30.00 hourly, commensurate with experience and internal equity
