Housing Inspector - Department of Housing & Community Development

Job Summary A Housing Inspector inspects the exteriors, interiors and adjacent grounds of vacant and occupied one- and two-family dwellings and the exteriors and adjacent grounds of commercial establishments to enforce Baltimore City Codes and Ordinances, including but not limited to health, housing, zoning, sanitation, building, fire and related codes. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior, work a conventional workweek with 24-hour callback duty, and perform the work in various City neighborhoods where seasonal extremes, pests, and deteriorating structures may be encountered. The job involves continuous standing and walking. Minimum Qualifications Education: Completion of two years at an accredited college or university. Experience: N/A. Equivalent: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate and two years of experience in housing inspection work or completion of the one-year Baltimore City Housing Inspector Apprenticeship Program. Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: Valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or equivalent, eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver's permit. Provisional driver's license or learner permit not acceptable. Applicants must upload a copy of their valid driver's license at the time of application. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Understand Baltimore City building, housing, health, and related codes for unimproved lots, alleys and occupied/vacant houses. Inspect property and determine code violations. Deal effectively with property owners, tenants, and the public. Use computer and proprietary business software to prepare clear reports and maintain records. Requirements & Conditions Mandatory six‑month probation for all selected candidates. Background check: Final consideration candidates must complete a criminal background check and/or fingerprint authorization. Eligibility: Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies for at least six months. Applicants must own a vehicle to fulfill job functions.
