Description The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering a faculty fellowship at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command - Institute of Surgical Research (USAMRDC ISR) within the Expeditionary Medical Systems (EMS) Department. This fellowship is focused on advancing military-relevant organ support, extracorporeal life support, trauma care, hemorrhagic shock management, critical care, and battlefield resuscitation capabilities. What will I be doing and why should I apply? This opportunity involves research within the EMS mission to deliver materiel and knowledge products that enhance Soldier survival in austere and operational environments outside traditional hospital settings. As the selected candidate, you will have the opportunity to participate in research that develops, tests, validates, and transitions emerging medical devices and systems using advanced technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence and machine learning, robotics, telemedicine, advanced displays, computer vision, and data-driven decision support. Particular emphasis will be placed on the maturation and transition of military-relevant medical technologies from preclinical evaluation through operational capability development to improve combat casualty care across the continuum from point of injury through prolonged casualty care. Research Projects and Learning Activities Gaining advanced scientific knowledge in subject matters including extracorporeal life support, organ support technologies, trauma resuscitation, coagulation, thrombosis, and critical care medicine. Designing, executing, and analyzing translational research programs involving medical devices, therapeutics, and physiological monitoring technologies relevant to combat casualty care. Developing scientific roadmaps, gap analyses, and technical assessments that inform future medical capability development. Participating in scientific review for ongoing intramural and collaborative research programs. Preparing manuscripts, technical reports, conference presentations, funding proposals, and transition planning documents. Collaborating between USAISR investigators and external academic, industry, and government partners to advance translational research objectives. Applying continuity and scientific integration across ongoing intramural and collaborative efforts involving organ support, critical care technologies, and prolonged casualty care. Location San Antonio, Texas Anticipated Start Date The USAISR is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified. Appointment Length Appointments are initially for one year with the option to extend the appointment for additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability. Provisions You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Participants do not enter an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Qualifications The qualified candidate is a faculty member at an accredited two or four-year institution of higher education and has an earned M.D. or Ph.D. in Basic Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Comparative Medicine and Laboratory Animal Medicine or other eligible discipline. Preferred Skills Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications, extramural funding, and translational research leadership Knowledge of military-relevant critical care, trauma physiology, organ support, coagulation biology, and medical device evaluation Experience with multidisciplinary collaborations involving academia, government, and industry Point of Contact Kimberly Eligibility Requirements Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only Degree: Doctoral Degree.
