Job Title: Sitework Designer II (Civil Designer II) Job Description

This position seeks an experienced Sitework Designer II (Civil Designer II) to support transmission and substation infrastructure projects for a large investor-owned utility in the southeastern United States. The role focuses on producing civil grading and site development design drawings for transmission and substation facilities, while providing technical guidance to design technicians and coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering teams. The designer contributes to project scoping, civil site design, construction support, and the development of best-practice engineering solutions for utility infrastructure projects. The position requires close collaboration with internal stakeholders, contractors, and field personnel and includes occasional travel to project sites. The role can be performed in a hybrid or remote capacity and requires reliable internet access when working outside of the office, with approximately 25% travel, including occasional overnight stays.

• Develop detailed civil grading and site design drawings for transmission and substation projects.
• Prepare layouts, conceptual designs, and complete design packages in support of lead engineers and project teams.
• Design civil site development projects with limited supervision, including grading, drainage, and stormwater management systems.
• Provide technical guidance and design direction to technicians, designers, and drafting personnel.
• Review and evaluate design work prepared by other designers and drafters to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance with project requirements.
• Assist with project scoping activities, including developing schedules, performing material takeoffs, and supporting cost estimating.
• Coordinate design efforts with multiple engineering disciplines, as well as with clients, vendors, contractors, and construction teams.
• Support construction activities by providing design clarifications and responding to field issues related to civil design.
• Incorporate survey data into design models and develop 2D and 3D surfaces, contours, and grading plans.
• Ensure all designs comply with applicable federal, state, local, and utility standards and permitting requirements.
• Manage multiple assignments simultaneously while maintaining high standards of quality, accuracy, and adherence to schedule commitments.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of best-practice engineering solutions for utility infrastructure projects.
• Collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders, contractors, and field personnel to support successful project delivery.
• Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence in all aspects of the work.

• Minimum of 5 years of civil site drafting and design experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Advanced proficiency with the current version of AutoCAD Civil 3D.
• Demonstrated experience with site grading design.
• Demonstrated experience with erosion and sediment control.
• Demonstrated experience with hydrology and hydraulic analysis.
• Demonstrated experience with stormwater management systems.
• Strong understanding of site grading and earthwork design.
• Strong understanding of drainage system design.
• Strong understanding of erosion and sediment control practices.
• Strong understanding of stormwater management design.
• Ability to process and utilize survey data to create accurate civil design models and surfaces.
• Working knowledge of federal, state, and local permitting requirements related to site development projects.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Technical training, vocational education, or relevant certifications in civil design or drafting.
• Autodesk Certification, particularly related to AutoCAD Civil 3D, is preferred.
• Experience supporting utility, industrial, energy, or infrastructure projects.
• Experience in construction estimating and construction administration.
• Experience with land development, sitework, and civil engineering design.
• Familiarity with best practices in stormwater management and erosion control for utility and infrastructure projects.

The role supports transmission and substation infrastructure projects for a large investor-owned utility in the southeastern United States. Work can be performed in a hybrid or fully remote environment, with reliable internet access required when working outside of the office. The position involves approximately 25% travel, including occasional overnight stays, to visit project sites and support field activities. The work relies heavily on AutoCAD Civil 3D and the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), as well as the use of survey data to build accurate civil models and surfaces. The environment is collaborative and multidisciplinary, involving regular interaction with engineering disciplines, contractors, vendors, construction teams, and field personnel. This is a Contract position based out of Birmingham, AL.

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
