Veterinarian - Chief of Staff

Job Overview The primary purpose and function of the Chief of Staff is to manage the hospital, ensuring the highest quality of veterinary care, exceptional client service, associate engagement, and maximum productivity of the veterinary medical team. The role advocates for pets and their quality of life, builds long‑term bonding relationships with clients, contributes to the development and maintenance of the human‑pet bond, and educates clients and hospital associates on all aspects of pet health. Responsibilities Leadership Responsibilities (≈20%–30% of time) Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within the team Partner with the Practice Manager (if applicable) to manage the hospital, provide consistent high‑quality care, and maximize efficiency, productivity, and profitability Train, supervise, and ensure compliance of associates with Banfield guidelines and practices Lead team meetings, communicate business information, and ensure associates are informed and engaged Identify bottlenecks and develop solutions to remove barriers in medical operations Interview, select, train, develop, coach, mentor, and, if necessary, discipline and terminate hospital associates Direct, lead, and mentor Associate Veterinarians; establish development plans (PDPs) and focus teams on practice priorities Maintain veterinary schedules; coordinate with Practice Manager for scheduling, time off, and CE planning Act as a communications liaison between associates, clients, field leadership, and Central Team Support Develop annual planning, budgeting, and hospital productivity goals in partnership with the Practice Manager, Field Director, and Medical Director Execute market objectives, goals, strategies, and measurements (OGSMs) Ensure all associates adhere to Banfield dress and grooming guidelines Provide leadership to other area hospitals as needed throughout the market Ensure compliance with all practice policies and procedures and all applicable laws Associate Veterinarian Responsibilities (70%–80% of time) Establish trust and client confidence through preventive care, complete diagnostic workups, treatment plans, and follow‑up communication Practice evidence‑based medicine and preventive care; validate decisions against guidelines or use sound judgment when guidelines are absent Maintain comprehensive, compliant medical records that meet practice quality control guidelines Lead the veterinary hospital team through daily schedules and caseloads; delegate tasks to paraprofessionals and improve efficiency Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service; prescribe and administer preventive care and disease treatment Advocate for preventive care and adoption of wellness plans Perform surgery on pets within Banfield protocols using standard equipment Promote safety by ensuring safe restraining techniques and maintaining sterile, organized treatment areas Strive to achieve performance metrics outlined by medical and field leadership Demonstrate integrity and ethics; address and resolve client concerns Develop strong, lasting relationships with clients Hiring Qualifications / Competencies Leadership Conflict Management Customer Focus Developing Direct Reports Directing Others Building Effective Teams Functional Hiring and Staffing Communication Skills Managing and Measuring Work Peer Relationships Drive for Results Capabilities and Experience (Can Do) Ability to multi‑task and manage multiple tasks simultaneously Strong organizational ability; clear systematic approach Proficient surgical skills, including use of all standard instruments and equipment Problem‑solving skills with practical solutions Accurate following of written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions Commitment to continual learning Mathematical ability and computing rates, ratios, percentages, and unit conversion Comfortable with computers and specialized veterinary software Attitudes (Will Do) Initiative and willingness to find solutions and present options Additional responsibility and focus during low demand periods Integrity; adherence to Banfield values and ethics Cooperativeness and willingness to collaborate and share information Flexibility and adaptability to changing situations Independence in performing tasks without supervision Stress resilience and composure in stressful situations Special Working Conditions Confidence around all pets Work may exceed 40 hours per week; may include weekends and evenings Moderately high noise level Physically demanding tasks: standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, lifting up to 50 pounds Requires good hand‑eye coordination and visual acuity for keyboard and medical equipment use Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch; occasional exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medications Some travel required to assist other hospitals, vendor visits, and associate education Experience, Education and/or Training Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree Applies Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with the applicable state board Two years of clinical experience required One to three years of coaching and developing associate doctors required Meets all required clinical competencies Benefits & Compensation Salary range: $117,000 to $170,000, dependent on experience, skill level, education, and location. Pay rates for salaried positions may differ based on schedule worked.
