Structural Field Engineer

Location: New Albany, OH. Telework Type: Full-Time Office/Project. Relocation Authorized: National - Family. Project Overview Bechtel is building a semiconductor manufacturing plant in New Albany, Ohio. The company will design and build Phase 1 of the Ohio One project, a total of 2.5 million square feet, including 600,000 square feet of cleanrooms. The construction will involve extensive steel and concrete work, supporting future economic development and training opportunities in the region. Job Summary In this role, the Structural Field Engineer reports to the Lead Structural Field Engineer. The engineer provides technical assistance, direction, and support to field supervision for construction and installation activities across all structural disciplines. Major Responsibilities Coordinate and resolve all issues related to structural execution in the pre‑assembly yard and field. Assist the Advanced Work Packaging team in developing work packages. Execute field material take‑offs from design drawings. Prepare field material requisitions and monitor the status of purchase orders and deliveries. Assist the Lead Structural FE in developing inspection and test plans. Perform and document inspections for the structural scope on an ongoing basis. Review quality documentation for content and accuracy per approved inspection and test plans. Interpret design requirements and ensure installation methods and finished work conform to design drawings, specifications, standards, and codes. Troubleshoot technical and constructability issues with design engineers or fabricators, using input from supervision. Document field changes and non‑conformances using formal approval processes. Participate in quality assurance reviews and facilitate resolution of quality findings related to civil structural activities. Review short‑ and long‑term schedules developed by supervision and verify alignment with material delivery schedules and key project milestone dates. Support superintendents in establishing requirements for manpower, tools, equipment, and material. Verify superintendent’s reported progress, resolve comments or discrepancies, and input installed quantities to Steel Slayer on an ongoing basis. Monitor actual work progress compared to the project schedule. Lead final area walk‑downs, punchlisting, close‑out, and turnover of structural systems. Assist with development and review of as‑built documentation. Education and Experience Requirements University hire with 1‑2 years of experience or 5‑6 years of relevant work experience and a minimum of 2 years of construction experience in the civil/structural discipline. Required Knowledge and Skills Strong knowledge of structural steel erection and the American Institute of Steel Construction manual and standards. Effective communication skills. Experience motivating team members, solving open‑ended problems, and presenting plans clearly and concisely. Preference for previous Bechtel experience. Experience managing technical services subcontracts is desirable. Intermediate to advanced proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite. Physical capability for field inspections: extensive walking on a construction site in extreme heat and cold, climbing ladders, working on elevated platforms and scaffolds, crawling and crouching, working on uneven surfaces, and working in small or confined spaces for extended periods. Ability to lift 25 lb objects. Ability to walk into and out of the project site (enter/egress). Ability to use standard issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for each task, including body harnesses and lanyards. Must pass a pre‑employment drug screen.
