The unit accommodates a variety of patients with severe mental illnesses and behavioral issues. Common diagnoses include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, anxiety, trauma, and more. Patients often present with multiple comorbidities but are typically medically stable. The role consists of administering medications, including psychotropics and performing patient assessments. Nurse-to-patient ratios may vary from 1:6 to 1:12 based on acuity. The staff includes triage RNs and designated RNs for adults and pediatrics/ adolescents. Additional duties may involve collaborating with psychiatrists and medical physicians. Patient Care Technicians support nurses with tasks such as phlebotomy and patient transport. The facility has respiratory therapists available to assist with respiratory needs. RNs are expected to identify major and life-threatening rhythms but may not be responsible for constant monitoring. Documentation is performed using a designated system. Teamwork, reliability, and strong communication skills are essential in this dynamic environment. The ideal candidate must possess a calm demeanor and the ability to handle crises effectively. Compassion and engagement with patients are vital to ensure early interventions and positive outcomes.
