Starting Date: Immediately Job Description TITLE: Special Education Teacher LOCATION: Emerson The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. Sixty‑plus languages are spoken in students’ homes. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest‑rated high school in the nation and #1 in Kansas according to US News rankings. With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies, KCKPS is the fifth largest district in Kansas. The student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. About 4,000 employees, including more than 1,800 teachers, work in the district. Job Goal To provide students with the ability to obtain knowledge, information, skills and to have a sense of self‑worth and dignity that will help them be successful as they transition from high school to the community. Essential Functions Advocate for the rights of students with special needs. Develop and maintain positive professional relationships with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and other service providers. Plan instructional programs for the classroom, including individual plans outlined in students’ Individual Education Programs. Serve as a liaison between the school and the community. Establish I.E.P./annual review meetings, affording parents and students the right to input, and notify all service providers per local guidelines. Serve as an active member on the I.E.P. team for students on the caseload. Maintain all I.E.P.s in accordance with federal, state, and local guidelines. Maintain close communication with mainstream teachers and other service providers, keeping them fully informed of student progress. Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the building or special education administrator. Provide a positive role model for students both in the classroom and outside of it. Evaluate student performance through diagnostic testing necessary for annual reviews and eligibility staffings, and quarterly updates on the I.E.P. Monitor student progress in mainstreamed classes. Assist in establishing class schedules. Supervise, evaluate, and help train paraprofessionals as assigned. Request equipment and supplies as necessary to meet objectives outlined in students’ I.E.P.s. Demonstrate curriculum knowledge and teaching strategies. Implement behavioral intervention plans as necessary. Assume other duties deemed necessary and appropriate per federal, state, and local guidelines and students’ Individual Educational Programs. Work a full duty day in the location(s) assigned by the supervisor. Possess the physical and emotional ability to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast‑paced, intensive school environment. Maintain a neat and appropriate appearance. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Meet the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and the Kansas State Department of Education. Hold or be eligible for Kansas certification appropriate for the position. Be tolerant and understanding of students with special needs. Show initiative, creativity, self‑motivation, and good judgment. Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility. Respect confidentiality. Exhibit excellent interpersonal skills, professional judgment, and oral and written communication. Be efficient and organized in paper management. Communication Maintain communication with teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action that meets the educational needs of students. Provide health services, information, and counseling in an effective and positive manner. Complete accident/incident reports for students and staff. Compile data for statistical purposes. Maintain confidentiality regarding educational records. Organization Maintain a daily log of school and staff visits and documentation. Keep the daily environment of the health office and supplies organized. Utilize existing technology effectively. Perform other related work as required. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization, and to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Language Skills Read, analyze, and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public. Physical Demands Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, or hear. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally push items of 50 pounds such as a bike or wheelchair. May occasionally visit a child’s home. Vision requirements include close, distance, and depth perception. Work Environment The noise level is usually loud and acceptable for this environment. The employee is directly responsible for students’ safety, work output, and well‑being. Other Skills and Abilities Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs. Plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and the community. Communicate clearly and concisely in written or oral form. Terms of Employment 186 days.
