Diesel Mechanic

Job Summary: TheDiesel Mechanic plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of a fleet of diesel-powered vehicles. This position is responsible for diagnosing and resolving moderate to complex mechanical issues on trucks and trailers. Essential Job Functions: Diagnose and repair moderate to complex mechanical and electrical problems Perform engine and transmission tear-down and overhauls Perform engine diagnostics and tune-ups Weld and fabricate components as needed Utilize diagnostic tools and software to identify issues accurately Conduct inspections to identify and diagnose minor mechanical issues according to Department of Transportation (DOT) Standards Keep accurate and thorough records of maintenance and repair work performed Maintain a clean and organized work area Comply with safety guidelines and federal and state regulations at all times Use diagnostic tools, hand tools, and specialized equipment Read precision instruments such as voltmeters, digital multimeters, calibrators and other electronic diagnostic tools Troubleshoot and perform failure analysis of the component parts and systems on the truck or truck tractor; or the component parts and systems of the truck Communicate with drivers, dispatchers and management to determine which repairs are necessary, determine priority and provide estimated time of completion Apply knowledge of DOT, EPA, and OSHA rules and regulations Travel within designated region for service calls and temporary roadside maintenance Participate in training programs to develop technical skills Other duties as assigned Required Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent Vocational or Technical training in diesel mechanics, welding, or a related field Valid Driver’s license in state of residency with acceptable driving record Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and submit to the company random drug and alcohol program Strong knowledge of diesel engines and automotive systems and components Willingness to learn and work in a team-oriented environment Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in varying weather conditions Ability to work any schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays Ability to read and understand technical service manuals Ability to operate and interpret industry standard diagnostic software for heavy duty truck tractors Preferred Qualifications: Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Knowledge of Cummings Insite and PACCAR Davie software Welding and fabrication skills Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential function of this job. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required for extended periods to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, lift, crouch or crawl. Flexibility including the ability to maneuver body into unusual positions to get at hard-to reach parts and frequent stretching, bending, reaching, and twisting. Ability to lift up objects that are 50 lbs over head and carry and move objects 60 lbs. Hand and finger dexterity: frequently have to grasp heavy parts and maneuver them into place. Ability to support the part while tightening screws or fit another part into place. Some parts and equipment require very precise adjustments, or the part may go into an area that is too small for the hand, so technicians need good coordination between the thumb and forefinger. Steady hands: The job requires holding one or both arms steady while working on a vehicle, sometimes for several minutes. Technicians need the strength to keep their hands steady even if their arms are taxed. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision especially when working on electrical systems, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus and make out small details. Hearing abilities to differentiate between sounds or locate the source of an unusual sound. Communication: Ability to speak with internal customers to determine the nature of the problem or to explain the work performed. Ability to discuss work with other technicians or supervisors. Ability to make self understood as well as be able to understand what others are saying. Work Environment: The duties of this job are performed in both a shop and office environment, a light industrial environment, and outdoors, thereby experiencing some minor to moderate level of noise due to equipment. Exposure to various climate conditions, fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease, and gasses. A technician must be focused on safety and works with a variety of potentially harmful substances, and the equipment can pose dangers if not handled properly.
