Mechanical Designer

Job Description Tasks: Under limited supervision, have overall responsibility in conjunction with others for the integration issues that cut across various subprojects as well as among different institutions to support the overall project planning and execution. This includes integration of processes across the project in the areas of: 3D model management across multiple CAD platforms. Development and maintenance of 2D drawings needed for stakeholders. Configuration Management and Change Control processes. Uses engineering background to develop creative solutions for complex interfaces, installation, tooling designs and overall integration. Integration of ES&H into requirements, design, and construction documents and processes. Integration of risk assessment and mitigation into design and construction. Draft and create shop drawings as well as use of Product Life Management software. Integrate models from various platforms in STEP formats. Work in both metric and imperial units. Interact with various stakeholders to understand the needs and requirements of new mechanical systems and convert these to designs. Use basic MS Office applications for email, documents, and spreadsheets, and assist in the preparation of reports and presentations. Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties as assigned and in accordance with all ESH regulations and practices pertinent to this position. Travel domestically and internationally up to 50% of the time for limited periods. Willing to spend extended work periods in Lead, South Dakota. Visit construction and installation sites including uneven terrain and difficult underground spaces. Qualifications Technical Requirements: Must have at a minimum: Certificate or associate's degree in mechanical design technology or equivalent. 5 years’ minimum experience with a parametric solid modeling program: Autodesk products preferred (Revit, Inventor, Plant 3D, Navisworks), Catia, Solidworks. Alternatively, must have at a minimum a college degree in Engineering or related discipline with proven experience with the same parametric solid modeling programs as above. Good understanding of assembly constraints and mates. Experience integrating models from various platforms in STEP formats. Must be able to read mechanical and electrical drawings. Experience should be greater than someone that has only done drawing revisions or alterations to existing products in a production environment. Other Requirements: Experience working with project teams in a manufacturing, industrial, or research setting. Ability to work independently. Ability to work within a team atmosphere and in an international environment. Experience working with laboratory and university groups preferred. Good verbal and written communication skills.
