Under the direction of the Budget Officer, the Supervisor I is a working manager responsible for the planning, developing, coordination, and supervising of budget-related activities for the California Department of Conservation. The incumbent oversees staff in budget development; accurately tracks and monitors program expenditures; tracks and reconciles provisional funding/expenditures for accurate reporting to control agencies; assists program and staff in the complex preparation and completion of funding requests.

Working Conditions

This position is located in Downtown Sacramento and is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, with employees required to work in-person at 715 P Street, MS 1806, Sacramento, CA 95814. Alternative work locations will not be considered.

Candidates who reside outside of the State of California may be admitted to the job interview but must show proof of residence in California prior to being eligible for appointment.

1. Describe your experience developing, monitoring, and analyzing budgets. Provide a specific example of how you identified a budget issue or trend, evaluated options, and made a recommendation that improved fiscal outcomes or supported organizational priorities.

2. Budget managers must communicate complex fiscal information to executives, program managers, and other stakeholders. Describe a situation in which you had to explain a complex budget issue, develop or recommend a solution, and gain stakeholder support. What approach did you take, and what was the result?

3. Describe your experience using financial, budget, accounting, and data-analysis software to manage and monitor budgets. Identify the systems and applications you have used, your level of proficiency, and how you used them to support fiscal decision-making
