Job Title: Highway Maintenance Tech Coordinator - 55007792 About the Role This position serves as a hands‑on lead worker within FDOT District Operations, providing leadership, coordination, and technical support for highway maintenance activities with an emphasis on the assembly and erection of highway signs. Responsibilities include coordinating daily maintenance operations for highways, bridges, and transportation infrastructure; directing crew workflows to meet deadlines, work objectives, and safety standards; and assisting with planning, inspections, materials coordination, and operational documentation such as crew activity reports and vehicle logs. The role also involves performing manual labor, operating medium‑to‑heavy equipment, conducting pre‑ and post‑trip inspections, performing preventative maintenance, and assisting with equipment repairs. Additionally, this position oversees Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) implementation in accordance with FDOT standards, promotes workplace safety, and supports crew development through training and leadership to ensure efficient, high‑quality maintenance operations. Responsibilities Coordinate, participate, and direct the maintenance activity of the assembly and erection of highway signs. Assist in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, and in inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, and work objectives. Maintain records of operations, prepare and maintain daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists. Perform manual labor in the maintenance of highways, bridges and other highway facilities using hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools. Upon receipt of a CDL Instructional permit or license, operate vehicles and medium/heavy equipment; perform preventative maintenance and pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections. Perform light maintenance and servicing work on equipment and assist in repairs, including checking/adding fluids, adjusting brakes, and maintaining tire air pressure. Perform Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Motivate crew members to improve the quality of work, evaluate others regularly, and communicate with employees individually and in crew meetings. Train crew members in basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: Mathematical calculations Standard safety rules and procedures Procedures, techniques, and use of medium/heavy equipment in highway maintenance and repair Crew leading principles and practices Skills in: Operating a variety of hand and power tools Performing minor maintenance on medium/heavy equipment and vehicles Filling out reports and forms and maintaining accurate records Communicating verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions Abilities: Train others Read and understand job‑related materials Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds; stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend frequently; work outdoors in various weather conditions; stand for extended periods; work independently and make job‑related decisions Other Job‑Related Requirements Must respond to emergencies when necessary. Must possess a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment, and a Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months. Must be available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle on duty and may perform other CMV safety‑sensitive functions. Must obtain and maintain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) Intermediate Level. Must work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency; or one year of experience in infrastructure construction or maintenance. Valid Class "E" driver's license and required CDL permits as specified above.
