CDOC CORRECTIONAL OFFICER I - Denver Correctional Facilities

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections prison facilities throughout the state. Correctional Officers support the CDOC mission with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. The role is based at the Denver Complex, which includes the Denver Reception and Diagnostic Center (DRDC) and Denver Women's Correctional Facility (DWCF). Responsibilities Work directly with inmates in a locked facility Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required) Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles Monitor visiting areas Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts Cross-check and maintain movement logs Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip, vehicle) Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards Inspect inmate mail and property Respond to emergency situations such as fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes Follow tool and key control protocols Attend roll call Document incidents using established reporting practices Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED certificate Conditions of Employment Applicants must acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment within the application process Must have valid U.S. work authorization; no H‑1B sponsorship Must be at least 18 years of age Must possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s license or be able to obtain one Must have no felony convictions Must successfully complete a background investigation Must pass a health screening; consent to hold harmless CDOC Must successfully complete all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including English reading comprehension, competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics Must possess the physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics training and are willing to use physical force as trained Must be willing and able to work all shifts, doubles, weekends and holidays; be able to work in inclement weather Must be willing and able to travel and/or transport inmates in a state vehicle Must pass TB screening upon hire Required Competencies Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability Sound judgment, reasoning and decision‑making skills Strong interpersonal skills, ability to cooperate and inspire teamwork Excellent customer service and attention to detail Ability to read and comprehend English Ability to communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing Ability to observe changes and hazards and communicate promptly Knowledge of criminal justice systems, state statutes, ADA, PREA and CDOC policies Intermediate computer skills and email communication Ability to perform searches, detect contraband, operate security equipment and use firearms safely Ability to maintain physical readiness, climb stairs, walk on hard surfaces and perform physical tasks Self‑control and strong emotional resilience under pressure Commitment to CDOC Drug Deterrence Program and safety protocols Preferred Qualifications Bilingual Experience mentoring others or volunteer work EEO Statement The Colorado Department of Corrections is an equal‑opportunity employer; we encourage applicants from all identities, backgrounds, and abilities.
