CDOC Boiler Operator Supervisor Trainee/Correctional Officer I (Buena Vista).

Department Information The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) offers the Boiler Operator Supervisor Trainee Program to train individuals in correctional facility boiler operations. The position is classified as a Correctional Officer I within this program. Job Location Buena Vista Correctional Complex. Description of Job The trainee will receive on‑the‑job training in boiler operations while maintaining safety and security at the facility. Successful completion may lead to promotion to Correctional Support Trades Supervisor (CSTS I). Responsibilities Maintain safety and security of the general public, staff, and inmates, performing inmate counts, transportation, and responding to emergency situations. Ensure safe, efficient, and compliant boiler house operations: conduct checks, read gauges, work on water heaters, air handlers, heat exchange pumps, steam traps, and perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance. Supervise inmate workers, set work standards, train inmates in boiler operations, create schedules, conduct job evaluations, update records. Ensure compliance with Colorado Boiler Code, International Mechanical Code, American Correctional Association, and all applicable regulations; track usage of tools, equipment, parts, expenses, and waste to stay within budget. Work closely with other trades (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, general maintenance) and may assist in these areas. Required Competencies Strong work ethic, integrity, and dependability. Proficiency in boiler plant operations and ability to perform predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance. Ability to troubleshoot and ensure uninterrupted service in a high‑stress, security‑driven environment. Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations and guidelines. Ability to supervise inmates and prepare them for successful community re‑entry. Strong desire to work cohesively as a team. Strong organizational and documentation skills. Technical computer skills. Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and resilient under pressure. Ability to effectively communicate fluent English orally and in writing. Preferred Qualifications Boiler Operator Certification. Experience as a utility plant or boiler operator. Experience installing, repairing and maintaining HVAC systems with hot water boilers or steam boilers above 15 psi. Experience providing supervisory/work‑lead duties in a correctional environment. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED certificate. At least 18 years of age. No felony convictions or domestic violence history. Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
