Writer - digital legal series - a job post by David Downey Seeking an experienced writer/screenwriter for a short-form scripted drama currently in development. The series is set inside the world of a high-end divorce attorney and draws heavily from the realities, characters, moral complications and cases that exist within that world. Tonally, we are not looking to make a traditional network legal procedural or a glossy lawyer show. Our creative references live closer to the grounded, character-driven storytelling of Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad and Taylor Sheridan’s work—where the profession provides the world, but character, consequence and moral complexity drive the story. The concept, characters, season direction and underlying world have already been developed. We are looking for a writer who can come aboard, collaborate closely with the producers and translate that vision into sharp, cinematic scripts. Our ideal writer: Has professional scripted writing experience, particularly drama. Understands economical storytelling and can build compelling scenes within a short runtime. Can write grounded, naturalistic dialogue without making the material feel overly expositional or “TV lawyer.” Is comfortable working from an established concept and taking detailed creative notes. Enjoys close collaboration with producers and subject-matter experts. Can balance authenticity with drama rather than sacrificing one for the other. Experience with legal material, crime drama, prestige drama or short-form/vertical storytelling is a plus, but not required. This is a paid freelance writing position with the potential to continue through the season if the creative partnership is successful. We are less interested in the size of your résumé than in finding a writer whose voice and collaborative style are right for the project. I’m an English-language screenwriter focused on short-form and vertical drama, particularly female-led thrillers, crime, romance, and high-concept serialized storytelling. I recently completed DEAD TO THE VALES, a 60-episode vertical thriller with episodes running 45–60 seconds. The series combines a female-led revenge story, legal and investigative elements, family power struggles, healthcare fraud, and serialized suspense. My writing emphasizes concise scenes, natural dialogue, strong episode hooks, character-driven conflict, and maintaining realism without sacrificing dramatic momentum. I’m especially interested in the challenge of building compelling legal characters and moral conflict within a short-form format.
