Settlement Paralegal

About the Opportunity

A well-established Northeast Ohio plaintiff-side law firm is confidentially seeking a Settlement Paralegal to manage cases from settlement through final disbursement. This is a numbers-driven seat. If you have a background in bookkeeping, billing, accounts receivable, or collections and you want to move that skill set into a law firm environment, this role is built for you. Prior paralegal experience is welcome but is not a requirement.

What You Will Do

• Manage settled files from agreement through closing and disbursement
• Request, review, and audit medical bills, balances, and payment ledgers for accuracy
• Identify, verify, and resolve liens and subrogation claims, including health insurance, hospital, and government-payer liens
• Prepare settlement statements and disbursement sheets, verifying every figure before funds are released
• Track incoming settlement funds and reconcile client trust account entries
• Draft and process releases, W-9s, and related closing documents
• Coordinate with insurance adjusters, opposing counsel, medical providers, and lienholders to move files to close
• Communicate directly with clients about their settlement figures, deductions, and timelines, often walking them through numbers they do not understand
• Maintain accurate records and handle confidential financial and medical information with complete discretion

What We Are Looking For

• 2+ years in a role involving billing, bookkeeping, accounts receivable, collections, claims processing, or account reconciliation. Law firm or medical billing experience is a plus, not a requirement
• A sales or customer experience background is preferred. Much of this job is direct contact with clients, providers, and adjusters, so candidates who have worked in client-facing, account management, collections, or relationship-driven roles tend to succeed here
• Strong Excel skills and comfort learning new case management and accounting software
• Genuine attention to detail. Every disbursement must balance to the penny
• Sound judgment, the ability to work independently once trained, and the composure to handle emotional client conversations professionally
• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Paralegal Studies, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience
• A candidate looking for a long-term home and real tenure
