About Us

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is the state government agency created to conserve and sustain the state's fish and wildlife resources through research, scientific management, wise use and public input. The NCWRC is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of North Carolina's fishing, hunting, trapping, and boating laws. The agency has an operational budget of approximately $100 million and employs approximately 700 full-time staff and 100 seasonal temporary staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, and customer service, information technology and administrative professionals. The NCWRC Mission is to conserve North Carolina's wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation.

Description of Work
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for a District 4 Wildlife Biologist (Conservation Biologist II) for the Wildlife Management Division.

The mission of the Wildlife Management Division is to conserve wildlife species and habitats and to develop, implement, and facilitate sound wildlife management policies and programs to ensure the wise use of wildlife resources by North Carolina citizens. This position is critical to accomplishing the Commission's goals of conserving fish and wildlife habitats and protecting, managing and enhancing wildlife populations statewide.

The position reports directly to the Coastal Operations Supervisor.

The primary purpose of this District 4 Wildlife Biologist position is to:
• Lead Wildlife Management Division (WMD) efforts in the nine-county district compromising Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Robeson, Sampson, Scotland counties in southeastern NC.
• Provide professional expertise and guidance to private landowners, land managers, corporations and governmental units regarding enhancement of wildlife habitats, wildlife population management, and other issues related to our state's wildlife resources.
• Provide technical guidance to address nuisance wildlife concerns and wildlife damage with species including American alligators, black bears, coyotes, white-tailed deer, Canada geese, etc.
• Develop and deliver educational materials to other professionals, organizations, and the public.
• Assist with wildlife research projects and recurring surveys as needed and serve as the district coordinator to ensure the appropriate collection of biological data.
• Monitor population trends for game and nongame species in the district.
• Investigate and monitor wildlife morbidity and mortality, conduct wildlife disease investigations and surveillance.
• Response to wildlife emergencies, including handling of living and dead wildlife.
• Assist with inspection of fox and controlled hunting preserves, and wildlife rehabilitation and holding facilities.
• Assist the Law Enforcement Division in identification, handling, and disposition of unlawfully held wildlife.
• Assist with the development and review of state hunting regulations and other agency guidelines.
• Serve as the local agency representative to state, regional, and national initiatives and partnerships related to wildlife management.

This is a HOME-BASED position. The workstation for this position is in the employee's home-based office using an agency-provided computer. The employee in this position is expected to provide home office space compliant with WRC and State policies. This position requires a home-based duty station in WRC District 4 (Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Robeson, Sampson, Scotland). North Carolina's Bladen County or Cumberland County are preferred by division leadership.

A Monday-Friday schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week. This position also requires frequent daily travel with occasional overnight stays.

RECRUITMENT RANGE: $ 63,927 - $ 80,000

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Understanding of the advanced principles of scientific methods, biological techniques, wildlife biology, botany, forestry, and ecology are necessary.
  • Understanding of wildlife capture, immobilization, restraint, transport and euthanasia techniques.
  • Accomplished communication skills to coordinate with resource professionals, relay technical information to fellow employees, and to the public.
  • Experience with personal computers, software programs, and smart devices.
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail.

Special Qualification/Requirement:

A Valid NC Driver's License is required within 90 days of employment.

Classification Specs | NC Office of Human Resources

Bachelor's degree in wildlife or fisheries management, fisheries science, zoology, or a biological science, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of related experience;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.
