Location: 2525 S Michigan Ave, Chicago IL 60616

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm W/ Rotating weekends, Saturday 9;00am - 3:00pm

Starting Pay Rate: $17.20 / Hourly + (Based on experience)

Dean's Professional Services is actively seeking a Hospital Specimen Technician (HST) to join our client's team.

The Hospital Specimen Technician is responsible for the preparation, processing, and handling of patient specimens within a hospital laboratory setting. This role ensures all pre-analytical procedures are completed accurately and efficiently while supporting specimen tracking, test send-out processes, problem resolution, and customer service functions related to laboratory operations and Quest Diagnostics testing.

Responsibilities:

• Perform specimen preparation and pre-analytical processing procedures accurately and in a timely manner
• Follow established policies and procedures for specimen handling, test ordering, sample preparation, and compliance requirements
• Demonstrate proficiency in hospital laboratory processing procedures and specimen requirements for testing
• Utilize hospital LIS systems and Quest laboratory systems effectively to support daily operations
• Print and manage Quest performed testing reports as required
• Interpret specimen flow and tracking data using available reports and resources
• Perform remote accessioning and pre-accessioning functions as required by the client
• Manage supply ordering processes to maintain adequate laboratory inventory
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to specimen types, missing information, test cancellations, additional sample requests, and other laboratory concerns
• Serve as a liaison between the hospital and Quest Diagnostics laboratories to provide proactive customer support
• Manage inbound calls professionally while maintaining positive client interactions
• Communicate effectively with hospital laboratory staff, Quest Diagnostics teams, and other departments regarding specimen issues, testing requirements, billing concerns, and problem resolution
• Maintain compliance with laboratory safety, legal, and regulatory standards while working in a biohazard environment

Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• 1-3 years of related work experience preferred
• Medical background and knowledge of medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory preferred
• Previous experience in a hospital laboratory environment preferred
• Strong data entry skills with the ability to enter approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
• Experience with hospital LIS systems preferred
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required
• Excellent communication, collaboration, customer service, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced production environment
• Ability to maintain composure and exercise sound judgment under pressure
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and environments
• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time while working in a laboratory setting
• Ability to follow laboratory safety protocols and maintain safe work practices in a biohazard environment
