Academic Support Teacher

Please apply here: I. General Description The teacher assists the Church and the school in the mission of evangelizing. The teacher contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and to the community. By bearing witness to Christ, His Church and the teachings of our Catholic faith, the teacher cooperates with Christ in the academic, spiritual, and social education of our high school students. The teacher leads, instructs, and utilizes effective pedagogy; obtains necessary academic certificates; participates in continual professional development; maintains detailed and accurate records as required by the school; and imparts a Catholic worldview through the curriculum. In addition to academic preparation, record-keeping and accountability, the teacher, as member of a "house" within St. John Paul II Catholic High School, serves as a mentor and campus minister to students. Status: Full-time Reports to Assistant Principal of Academics or Designee

II. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Strives to achieve the goals of Catholic education and the mission of this school:
• *Establishes an atmosphere where students can encounter the living Christ
• *Promotes and lives the gospel values and Catholic moral teaching
• *Upholds the doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church
• *Forms students to have true freedom
• *Assumes responsibility for the leadership and management of the **Academic Support Program in close collaboration with the Asst. Principal of Academics.
• *Ideal Candidate possesses a minimum of 5 years teaching experience
• *Teaches students who are in need of additional academic support and who are enrolled in the Academic Support Program. (Students in this program have one class period of ASP every other day)
• *Provides students with assistance in curriculum support, organization, time management, strategies for studying, and test preparation
• *Able to provide curriculum support, especially in Math and English

Good communication skills and ability to work well with teachers in all academic departments

• *Assists counselors with the creation and implementation of Student Support Plans
• *Plans and attends student support meetings
• *Provides a positive learning environment with understanding of inherent dignity of each person
• *Works toward a creation of a Catholic community within the classroom and the entire school community
• *Teaches in accordance with diocesan and local policies as well as appropriate state laws
• *Creates educational plans for individual students who are scheduled for Academic Support Program.
• *Coordinates schedules for accommodations that are part of the individual learning plan for students
• Develops and implements an instructional program according to the needs of the students and the established Diocesan Curriculum Standards:
• *Determines level of student achievement
• *Evaluates students in relation to Diocesan and School Curriculum Standards
• *Uses appropriate teaching strategies to meet individual student needs
• *Uses a variety of instructional strategies
• *Refers students for evaluation and consultation when necessary in collaboration with administration and parents
• Maintains accurate records in all record keeping as required by the school:
• *Maintains proper grading and/or reporting system for each student as required by the principal
• *Meets deadlines with official classroom reports, attendance, and statistics as required by the principal
• *Establishes positive school community relationships:
• *Communicates effectively with students and parents in accordance with the school's communication guidelines
• *Is a positive influence, good representative, and proactive communicator
• *Maintains cooperative relationships with all in the school community
• *Cooperates with and helps promotes various curricular and co-curricular programs within the school
• *Promotes and participates in community service
• *Ability to speak and write in both English and Spanish is a plus
• Plans for, participates, and completes professional development to remain current with religious and academic certifications:
• *Keeps informed of current instructional practices through professional reading and educational opportunities
• *Actively participates in the process of continuous school improvement
• *Maintains personal professional development records
• *Performs any other job related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the Principal or Assistant Principal

III. REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS

• Practicing Catholic who is joyfully faithful to the church's tradition and teaching
• Must hold a Bachelor's Degree
• Understands the complementary relationships between faith and reason
• Willing to make a public Profession of Faith
• Thinks, plans and makes decisions with prudential judgement and right reason
• Able to meet Ministry Formation Certification as required by Diocesan policy
• Able to teach skills needed for communication and communion __ a common sense of right and wrong, good and evil, truth and falsehood, so that students can analyze what they read and write in light of the true, good and beautiful
• Writes effectively and teaches students necessary writing skills
• Communicates clearly using grammatical and respectful speech
• Organized, creative and able to show initiative
• Knowledge and experience using good teaching techniques that work in a 90 minute class period
• Certifiable by the Arizona Department of Education as a teacher
• Dual Certification in both Elementary and Secondary Education is a plus
• Must complete the Safe Environment Training and fulfill other diocesan requirements
• AZ FBI Fingerprint clearance card required
